  • I'm gettin' a Splawn!

Well, after trying most every modeler out (V-Amp 2, V-Amp Pro, Pod XT, XT Live, ToneLab LE, Vetta (twice), Digitech GNX2, Digitech GNX4 (still have that one), Axe FX), I am going to try the real thing. I just bought a Splawn Pro Stock, which I hope to pick up this weekend. I might get the Splawn 4x12 that goes with it, too. I haven't decided on that yet.

I hope it sounds as good as some of the clips I've heard. Lately, I've been running my Tech 21 GT2 into my little Marshall Haze combo, and that is proving to be a great little practice rig, but after I sold the Axe FX, I figured I would get a replacement stage rig, and I've been wanting a Splawn for years, so I guess this is finally the time. Wish me luck! And tell me whether you think it would be worth it for me to get the Splawn 4x12, or whether I should just use my current G-Flex 2x12!

Thanks for the tip on the cab. The seller wants $500 for the 4x12, which is apparently 2 months old, with "Small Block" speakers in it. I don't know if that's a good deal or not. I see Splawn sells 'em for $750 new. I don't know what shipping would be, or if there is a several-month wait for them, like there is for the amps.

Yeah that seems about right for the cab if you wait and watch on ebay you may be able to score one for 400 but its a rare occasion.

Thanks. I'm going for it. I just talked to the seller, and he seems like a very decent guy, which means a lot in my book. I'll let you guys know how it turns out.

Next, I have to figure out which reverb to get for it, since it has none. I am thinking maybe a Digitech Hardwire RV-7 ($149), since it says it uses Lexicon reverbs, or else a Holy Grail Nano Reverb ($119), or maybe a Tech 21 Boost R.V.B. ($149). Anyone have experience with these, or others I might consider? I don't need or want anything complicated. Just a killer sounding, spacious reverb.

Thanks. That looks nice. I wish the one I'm getting had the salt and pepper grille (it has black), but I am told this one is only a couple months old, and I'm going to be driving to pick it up, along with the head, so at least I won't have to worry about shipping.

Ya shipping would cost about 100 bucks so it's pretty much the same.

The two reverb pedals I use and like are the T-Rex Room Mate and the Guyatone RV2. Both are simple to use. The T_Rex is pricey at around $369 but sounds great. The RV2 is not in production anymore but its tiny, smaller than a Boss pedal, but sounds fantastic.

Thanks! I am also reluctantly considering a G-Major.

I say reluctantly, because I am trying to simplify my setup, and I really don't need or want many effects, but it looks like a heckuva deal for about $200 used (there's one on ebay right now for $199). I guess if I had one, I would use the noise gate, pitch detune (for a very understated chorus/thickening effect), reverb, and delay for solos if I could figure out a way to switch it on/off with my Tech 21 MIDI mouse. And for a tuner, assuming it has one built in.

yes, the G-Major does have a built in tuner. You'll have to try it and see if it works well in the loop of your amp. I tried it in the loop of my Bogner Uberschall and it killed my sustain even with the noise gate turned completely off. Its not just the G-Major, nothing I ran through there worked well so now I just use the loop on/off button for a solo boost function. Any effects with my Uberschall are pedals through the front of the amp. You are right though, for about $200 used the G-Major is a worth a try.

Congrats on the Splawn. Let us know how she sounds. How much Reverb do you want? A Fender Reissue Reverb tank is the way to go. Change out the middle tube to a 6K6. I got my 6K6 tube from Kendrick amps. The reverb goes from minor to dripping surf. Just awesome. Nothing like a tube driven reverb. If you go digital, I like the G-Major.
