I hear you. I like simple. I don't need more than one channel. I don't play clean at all and I don't need different gain levels for "rhythm" and "lead."

That's what kinda sucks about my Boogie - It can do all these great sounds, but I only need it to do one - so I'm ignoring 95% of what it can offer. With the Marshall's that I've owned in the past, it was more like: Here's the sound & how loud do you want it.

I've had no problems with mine with 6L6s. It's a versatile amp, great for all the styles my little cover band plays. I like the clean headroom and I'm not looking for power tube saturation

Those push buttons really scare me... push push push who the hell knows what channel you're going to get. They should have used toggle switches.

I have an JCM 900 SL-X that came with EL-34s and it's a great amp. I have had the amp for over 10 years now. I like how it's simple and doesn't have a lot of knobs

GT, what about a JCM800 50-watt 1-12" combo? It doesn't get much simpler than that, and it definitely has the "Marshall sound."

Jazznoise - I'd consider it, but I don't think they have enough grunt for me honestly.

                      Hmmm...

Well how about a Mesa Boogie Mark II?

Yeah, it's very possible the JCM800 would not have enough preamp gain for you. It didn't for me... It was awesome cranked flat out, but until 7 or 8 it just didn't quite do what I wanted.

Plus... the 900 goes to "20."

If you want simple, the Marshall Rhoads head is as simple as it gets. Not even a footswitch because there is no second channel. Turn guitar volume knob down and thats your "clean" channel, turn guitar volume up and tear everybody's head off Anyway, having said that I have played through JCM 900's before and thought they sounded fine. I don't know why they get a bad rap. Besides, the effects loop in the JCM 900 actually works!

Yeah, if I was playing Shea Stadium that would be a good option, but I need a master volume. I'd love to play through one of those eventually.

Why not check out one of the original series 8100 or 8200 Valvestates?

My first amp was an 8020 when it came out way back in 92 or so. Still got it up at my lake house:

The crappy push-push button power button went south in the first 6 months. I've had it duct taped down for the past... 17 years or so.
