  • Soldano Hot Rod 50

Damn. This is probably the sexiest looking amp ever...in the world.

Anyone have anything to say about the Hot Rod, or any other Soldano for that matter?

I'm dying to finish my SLO-clone, and I need to talk about this stuff to keep me sane.

Well, I can tell you that our band played on Halloween, along with another band, and their lead guitarist had a Soldano SLO 100. His tone was fantastic. It had a really musical, singing quality. I loved it.

Played a really great sounding Hot R0d 50 2x12 a few years ago. Still kicking myself for not buying it. Sounded like a great 800 with lots of thick sustain.

My friend had one of these in white snakeskin many yrs ago. I thought it kicked ass. I also like how the controls were behind on top, so it looked like a small 4x12 from the front.

He had a Marshall valvestate before this and I thought he traded way up. He since traded for a Bogner ectasy, then Uberschall, then back to Marshall, which currently may be a JVM, but haven't spoken to him in a while. The Uberschall was a monster, but the hot rod did 80s metal to a tee.

I gotta SLO-clone that it major kickass,.. just difficult to be able to turn it up to make it sing.

            I'm building it v e r y s l o w l y. I just ordered my tube sockets. Then I'll need pots, knobs and trannies, and I think that's it.

Maybe you could build it morequickly if you stopped surfing the web looking for one

(as if I'm one to talk, I haven't built an amp in ages. I'm good at buying the parts through)

I'm still kicking myself Zeegler. There was a Hot Rod 50 on Ebay, a couple months ago, it ended up going for about 850$, plus it was within a couple hours of me in Calgary! Ah well I'll just crank up the Laney

I've been tempted to build the 50, but a more experienced builder
noted it does not sound as good as the 100.
So I dropped the idea, just have no use for all that right now.

I'll stick to my lo-watt monsters for now.

Yeah, like that will ever happen! :ROTF:

Actually, the reason it's taking me so long, is because I take forever deciding what parts to order. I can't seem to shit or get off the pot. I have been debating over what transformers to use for months, and still haven't made a decision. I'll probably end up buying a SLO right around the same time I finish building the clone. That's how ridiculous I am. Ridiculous I tell you!

I know! I could have picked it up too, it was only a couple hours away.

                        I had the cash too.

Ok I look dumb enough now. Ha ha

I have a Hot Rod 50 and the matching 4 12 cab with Vintage 30's, bought new in 1995(?). Fantastic amp, remarkably well built and great sounding. Toured all over the eastern coast and received a lot of compliments from quite a few soundmen.

A local store was blowing these out as they had moved from carrying Soldano to Boogie-mine was the last and they let me have the head and cab for around $1200. The head was a demo and developed some problems a short while later. I returned it and about 3 weeks later received a note-plus a new head-from Mike Soldano. They spent a week chasing the problem and gave up on it, sent me the new head and immediately after found the problem: a small crack in a capacitor was cutting the signal-he sent the cap taped to the letter...great service.

Terrific amp...very flexible and taught me a lot about how to play.

Went into a studio shortly after getting the HR50 to record our second cd and they had an SLO-amazing. I could go on forever about that experience. They claim the preamp stage in the HR50 is the same as the SLO, but I don't know...the SLO is such a different beast. If I had the 4 G's kicking around I'd be all over an SLO.

I still have the HR50, though it's been replaced with a small rack simply because I don't want it to get trashed. Don't see myself ever getting rid of the HR. If you have a chance to get one, I would definitely recommend it.
