  • Bogner XTC or Marshall JVM

Ok, another opportunity has popped up. Someone wants to trade me his Bogner XTC for my JVM plus cash or a guitar. Would you do it? As always, my first question is does the Bogner sound good low as well as loud? We'll see how it goes.

Yes, I'd do it! The Bogner Ecstasy is perhaps the best 3 channel amp out there! Incredible tone and it does sound fantastic at any volume although like most tube amps if you want that awesome tube sound you'll have to crank the power amp section. You can also use the 1/2 power switch for lower volume as well. The various voicings and switches on this amp make it incredibly versatile. And it doesn't just do these sounds so so, it pretty much excells at them! What options does it have on it? Metal front panel? Class A/AB switch? Even without these options you are looking at one of the all time greats! How much cash exchange difference is involved in the deal and are both amps in great shape?

It depends what you want. Personaly they're both to loose for me. The bogner seems to be a little smoother with less buzz and aperently can copy the plexis soind pretty well.

Definitely jump on the XTC! I have yet to be impressed by the JVMs.

Which xtc is it? Is it 101B? I Would say go for it. The Ecstacy is a really great amp. One of my top 5 favorites. I had an opportunity to trade for one once and passed it up... wish i didn't but that is another story. Go check it out... How much cash do you need to put out also depends I guess too...

              I agree.

I saved myself a 3 grand mistake this year by playing an amp before i bought it. I wanted a Soldano SLO for years, well, I found a used one in snakeskin with matching cab for 3K. I drove 7 hrs to play it. I was not 3K impressed. I was very dissapointed in the build quality as they are so hailed for great quality. not to me it wasnt. and you had to crank it to get any decent tone out of it. it was LOUD AS FUCK!!!!!!! hurt my fuckin hears bad. so I tried a Splawn quick rod sitting right next to it. the Splawn blew it out of the water in lots of ways. features, tone at lower volumes, build quality, value.

now dont get me wrong, I am not dissing Soldanos, but for me it wasnt worth over 3 grand for a used amp. no way. the snakeskin print tolex was cheesey as hell, and the cabinet was chinsey as hell, and the amp wasnt very versatile. if I was headlining arenas nightly, sure its great, but its way the fuck too loud for basement jamming. I ended up ordering a Splawn quick rod, and I frickin LOVE IT.

go play it, no better advice can be given for amplifiers.

Well, as a B'day gift to myself, I got the Ecstacy 101B and what an amp it is. All of the channels sound great, but the red channel is soooooo liquidy smooth. I only got to play it for a few minutes last night, but from what I heard, it sounds wonderful. I traded a Randall RM100 and a beater Les Paul - I guess about a $2000 trade value for it, so there wasn't any actual cash out of my pocket. All in all, a pretty cool amp, and I got to keep my JVM.

Congrats! That was a good deal as 101B's are easily worth more than $2K. That amp is just a tone machine! I'm assuming you got the footswitch with it right?

                        ^^^^

Got the 7 button footswitch. Lots of buttons and switches. I thought the 2 boosts were solo boosts, but looks like they're more gain boost. Lots of stuff to play with.

Chris - I'll be around until 5 as I have rehearsal. I'll be around all day tomorrow if you wanna come by and make noise.

Yes, lots of little stuff to play with indeed. You also got those excursion mini switches and whatnot. The nice thing is there is no bad setting anywhere on that amp

congratulations!!!!!!!! you got the better end of the deal without question. I have the 101B, its been one of my favorite amps for several years running now.

Have fun playing with all the switches and settings. Remember if you find a tone that you really like to write the setting down way too many variations to remember

                              Congrats!!!! Hey thats great!!!

I will someday own a Bogner XTC. not for a while. maybe within the next 5 years. I realize this is kinda non issue for sound, but damn I just cant get into the look of bogner products. I realize they are super high quality in components and craftsmanship, and superior tone quality, but dammit, I just wish they would make them a bit more pleasing to the eye. One cool thing about Boogie, Splawn, and others that allow you to pick the finish options. I just cant get into that tweedy looking front plate and stuff. I realize its Bogner's style, but its not mine. I will just have to grin and bear it.
