  • Just bought a 68 gibson!

I just picked up what I hope to be a good find from a thrift shop. Its a 68 gibson duo medalist 1x12. The thing is like 2 and a half feet tall and looks weird. It needs a speaker but everything seems to be in good shape. This is my first tube amp. One thing Im loving about it is that all the knobs got to 12! Take that Tufnel! Anyone know anything about these amps?

a few others i'd rather not mention
Nigel Tufnel: (holding up a guitar) The sustain, listen to it.
Marty DiBergi: I don't hear anything.

Nigel Tufnel: Well you would though, if it were playing.

Not that specific model. I have a GA-5T and a pair of Kalamazoo's (Gibson's lower end at the time).

Speakers are pretty important. To get the sweet tone, you need sweet speakers. Usually Alnico models. I have a ceramic CTS speaker in my Kalamazoo Model 1 (original was missing) and it's harsh. Might just need a breaking in period...?

Im planning on using a cab thru the extension jack to make sure everything else works first.

          Gibson Duo-Medalist

I have a Due-medalist and have learned alot about these amps. There are few things you should know about them, including some simple mods, which are really only removing a total of six caps and resisters that really improves the amps performance. I will detail this in a future post if you are still interested. Let me know. I can also be reached at [email protected] It might make sense to e-mail direct as I am not that versed in how to post pictures and other files on to the forum. Thanks!
