Carvin X100B

anyone have any experiance with this amp? ive heard carvins werent too reliable but i thought i should ask you guys.

My Carvin MTS is built like a tank. I played through the X100B once and it was pretty killer, but that was a long time ago.

The X100B is practically bullet proof. There aren't too many amps out there that are more reliable. Regarding tone...there is a big difference between old ones and the new reissue. Both have a great clean channel. The gain channel on the old model is vintage/classic distortion with a little fizz if the gain is up too much. Good for old school rock. I never heard the reissue model but I heard it has a more modern gain.

I have an X100B that I've had since the mid-80's and I've never had any problems with it. It's a very under rated amp IMO. It has a excellent clean channel, but the overdrive channel lacks the gain of more modern amps, if that's what you are looking for. The amp is very loud and it takes pedals/effects very well. A tubescreamer or other overdrive works great in front of the amp.

I have one purchased new from the early 90's and have never had any problems with it. It's a very versatile amp and through the years it's the only amp I have refused to sell. I haven't played the reissues.

I originally had one from 85. I never had any issues with it. I regret selling it. I sold it in the mid to late 90's

I played one in the late 80's through the matching Carvin cab and it sounded great. The 5 band EQ was a great tone shaping tool. The clean channel was nice and really capable of powerful air movement. The crunch channel was nice and the amp really played nicely with an old sd-1. It would get hairy sounding if you did dime the amps gain all the way instead of using an od pedal.

Never had one.
BUT...I had 1200 dollars to spring for an amp, shopped long and closely.
I went bananas and used the money to start building my own amps instead.
Saying that, from the opinions I got...it was the ONE I would buy if I was going to buy a production manufactured amp.
Seriously dependable, and very open to pedals.

Carvin just never gets the rep it deserves.
Give that another decade or 3 I guess.

I used a X60 combo in the '80's. Had that thing dimed 6 days a week and it never complained. I still have it and it still sounds great, but I've switched to the legacy II.

i had an older 80's X100B years ago. had it modded for 6L6's and mild changes to the gain stage to make it not so fizzy/buzzy sounding. great amp, never had any problems even after the mods. i dont know anymore but the older ones use to be pretty cheap.

I play with a guy that has one. It is a good sounding amp for sure.
