  • Splawn?

I'm considering bringing Splawn amps into the shop and am curious what you guys think of them... Would you buy one? Any Splawn owners here who have had problems or good experiences with their amps?

    Thanks for your input!

I have a 2009 Nitro with KT88's. After messing around with Dual Recs, Framus Cobra, EVH 5150 lll, Marshall rack, Soldano and even a Vetta, I eventually gave Splawn a shot.

It has all the gain and low end of all the above (if not more), but it cuts through properly, which none of the above (except perhaps for the 5150 lll) could quite manage without compromise.

My Splawn oozes quality, both in build and tone. It took me a long time to try one out (not least because of availability in the UK) because I thought it was just a hot rodded Marshall (nothing wrong with that). My Nitro out gains my 5150 yet can back off to a Fender clean (no use to me though).

I love it and I'll be getting an EL34 Nitro in the coming year.

My Quick Rod was a bit tough to dial in at first and I thought maybe I had made a bad choice. After some getting used to it time and gigging with it I can safely say that it isn't going anywhere any time soon. It has a well articulated, very high gain but not overly saturated sound which keeps a player on his toes. I find some of the control knobs like bass to be completely ineffective, and to get the best bite I need my presence and treble just about all the way up otherwise the amp is worthless. I've heard of people setting all that at 12:00 but that sure doesn't work for me. When the thing is on it is very on though. I have been using a Lee Jackson XLS-1000 for the past 5 years or so and I thought it was the cat's meow, but now that I am used to the Splawn the Lee Jackson sound like a muddy mush.

Anyway, the build quality is superb as is Scott's customer service. I wished there was a dealer on the East Coast (I'm in NH) so I could have tried and compared it to the Nitro before I bought it but that was an impossibility. I think you might be well served to be the only dealer in the region to have them. The sound is fairly unique though, perhaps Scott would send you a demo model to try out and see for yourself. They do kind of have to be heard in order to understand the thing that is called Splawn.

I think that because of the small nature of Scott's operation and a somewhat specialized niche sound you shouldn't expect to sell 100 of them a month, but most customers who pick one up will likely end up being very happy. He also just unveiled a 1x12 combo which should add a nice bit of practicality to the line up.

Definitely do it, Matt. Great amps. I owned a Quickrod and loved it.

They do seem like very well built and well sounding amps.

Guess it depends on your customer base and how knowledgeable they are or how open they might be in changing their mind to a lesser known manufacturer if they came into the store for a more mass marketed amp like a marshall or mesa.

I'd love to have the option to demo them out alongside the other big names.

Owned a Nitro with KT88's also. Had awesome tone. The one thing was that it goes from 0 to infinity volume wise and there was nothing inbetween which was the reason why I didn't keep it. Practically blew the cat out of the room when I first turned it on =)

Thanks for all this guys. I'm curious... did you buy your amps direct from Splawn or through a dealer?

Bought mine used on ebay but while looking I was jonesing hard enough to have bought one at retail, if anyone around had been carrying them. I did buy my 4x12 cabinet new through a dealer though.

I have a Quick Rod. I got mine direct from Splawn. I cannot say enough good about the amps and the company. I spoke with Scott several times, and I spoke with Josh once. both of them very curteous, knowledgable, and willing to help. the product is very high quality. its great. the tone is amazing. I like the features in the amps, and the prices are good.

all in all, I cannot say enough good about them.

Great amps, great company to work with. I recently picked up an early 2005 Pro Mod with MM trannies and I love it to death. It sounds fantastic and it's built like a tank! Now I'm trying to keep the Nitro GAS at bay...

I don't think you could go wrong carrying them, tbh.

I have an older Quick Rod 50 watt....'04 I think. It's my favorite amp of about 30 or so. I bought mine from a member here when the amp was only about 1 month old. But I would have purchased from Scott directly if this one hadn't been available. Mine is orange tolex...looks really killer!
