  • Aw, what the hell? Uberschall tones on a Mark IV?

I've asked this on other forums, but every answer I've received has been a 'no'. Does anyone else have any secrets to get a Mark IV sound like a Uberschall? I personally feel the Mark IV has enough low-end and mids to get the tones. Maybe the Uber has more low-end, but that's besides the point. But the Uber has a sort of mid-range bark that's just...

From listening to the Uberschall clips on Bogner's site I don't see anything short of a modelled Uberschall coming close. It gain/distortion is just different than other amps. It's very thick but at the same time, kind of clean on the bottom. Almost like some of the bass frequencies are amplified cleanly and slightly mixed underneath the distorted tones.

I don't know mkIV from first hand experience, but maybe try running it with the gain backed off to heavy crunch and slam it with a tubescreamer or SD-1 with high volume, low gain. Put an MXR in the loop with a nike swoosh kind of shape and it will give you that upper-mid sizzle with the punch you in the balls lows. Use the tone control on the OD pedal to tweak in/out midrange.

      Mk. IV's 6L6 -vs- Uberschall's EL34 perhaps?

Mine is running on simul-class. Two 6L6's inside and two EL34's outside. I can run it in Class A with only the two EL34's. In fact, I have E34L's which give more Low-end than EL34's but lose out on some of the mid-range. Maybe that's the problem??

BTW, is the KT-88 mod really necessary or the beast will sound equally good with EL-34's? What exactly is the reason to do the mod?

My Bogner Uber has EL34 tubes in it and I love it! Even if you could get a Mark to sound similar to an Uber, which based on what I've heard from other amps I doubt you could get, At what volume are you going to get that tone? Some of the most impressive aspects of the Uber besides its killer distortion are that the Uber sounds good even at low volume. Most Mesa stuff changes drastically low vs. high volume, my Dual Recto is like this. Put it another way, the Uber sweet spot is pretty huge whereas Mesa has a narrow sweet spot. The other thing is the Uber sounds good even with the gain maxed all the way up. Most other amps turn to mush if you crank the gain that high.

These two amps sound nothing alike. If you prefer the tone of one or the other, buy it. There isn't any way you'll make one sound like the other.

And then with the Axefx, you get 40 more boutique amps thrown in
for more fun! Sure its probaly only 90% of the real thing... but thats
                    close enough..if just a Bogner!

The Mark IV is nowhere like a DR and vice versa. I get killer distortion without a OD pedal and low volumes AND the same holds at super high volumes as well. There are TONS of usable tones and the flexibility cant be beat. Last night I set it up such that only the clean and lead channels activate the loop with a MXR 10 band and a delay but the rhythm channel activates without the loop but only the on board graphic eq. I have a fat rhythm tone and can switch to a super compressed, super scooped, Lead with a delay. The versatility of the Mark IV cant be beat.

Also, in Class A, I'm running only E34L's in the outer sockets so yes, it is like a traditional EL34 amp. I need to upgrade my speakers. But yeah, the bogner's preamp EQ voicing is the only part that's missing and for that I should get a Uber. If only getting the tone in your head was that easy. :ROTF:

It's a lot closer than you are going to get with a Mark IV

I have only one question: what is Bogner, and why bother getting its tone on Mark IV?
