  • All of these modelers..

What exactly are they? In my case I have the Digitech RP50 and the Behringer Vamp Pro. I've been using them with a powered speaker (Rockit 6), but I was wondereing if these things in actuality are nothing more than a preamp with a whole lot of fancy do dads added in. I bought an old Peavey solid state rack power amp ( http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...=STRK:MEWNX:IT ) and I am hoping that I will be able to use the Vamp or RP50 as the preamp. Anyone know the truth here?

    Are the modelers preamps?

Yes you can do that. I used to run a GNX3 in front of an Eleca power amp for my live rig. Sounded great after a few hours of dialing in my tone. The only reason I gave up that rig was because after countless load ins and outs and 10 min. setup slots I decided it was too cumbersome for live shows as an unsigned artist(i.e. lack of roadies).

Yes the modeling amps are just preamps. I bought a modeling amp last year (vox vt50) and had used a marshall valvestate 8100 for years. I had a line 6 uber I used on the clean for real heavy stuff. I thought I could still use that on the line 6 and I can't, the cleanest of the 66 presets on the vox still runs through the preamp and the pedal sounds like complete shit. Vox runs the power and the preamp through the one tube. If you get a modeling amp make sure it has 2 channels one that is before all the fancy shit or distortion pedals are out.

I'm pretty sure that the V-amp does have just a pure amplification setting ...nothing added to it whatsoever...its not even a clean channel, just the exact guitar signal amplified, so if I do want to run my pedals, I don't think I'd have a problem.

you could just add the behringer fcb1010 and have a decent rig. that way you can utilize all the functions of the v amp pro. at one point i had a POS marshall mg head that i mounted the vamp pro into then ran the output of the vamp into the clean input of the head. sounded good enough for government.

Right on JDR! Specially seein as how thats who I work for and my coworker friends will be the only ones hearing !!! I've been debating whether or not to spend the $ on the FCB1010. I think I might go ahead and do it even though my knowledge of midi is practically non-existant.

Oh yeah fo some reason or another (alcohol?), I bought a BBE 362 Sonic Maximizer...any ideas where to slip this into the mix? Right now I have a shitload of pedals...my Behringer V-amp or Digitech RP50, and a Peavey M-4000 Mark V Series Stereo Power Amplifier. was gonna run modeler...pedals...power amp...somic maximizer...that sound about right? Or do I have it all outta whack? Also, if and when I get the FCB1010, where the hell would that go in the chain?

                your pedals>vamp>sonic maximizer>power amp>speakers

i was kinda suggesting the footcontroller to eliminate the pedals, but i guess i shoulda asked what pedals are you using. i cant remember if the vamp had an effects loop. i dont think so, but basically you can think of the vamp and the preamp everything between the vamp and the power amp is in the loop so to speak. not sure if that helps you or not. are you using your pedals strickly for distortions and the vamp for effects?

edit- if you run the power amp thru the maximizer my guess is you;ll blow the inputs of the 362.

Wow thanx for setting me straight on the maximizer. I've got a plethora of pedals that I was gonna try stringing in between the vamp and the power amp (same idea as using a built in fx loop I was thinking) My pedals include a really heavy distortion pedal, two different overdrives, envelope filter, a fuzz pedal, boost pedal, a delay pedal, and a wah...(might try at least a few more, but these are the ones I was thinking of having in there).I've got em so I figured that I should make an attempt at putting them to use. I'd like to have the option of using strictly presets via the fcb1010, or coloring my tones with individual pedals ...not sure if it is a good idea or not, but I'm one that is always willing to experiment.

well from what i understand certain pedals work best before/after the preamp. i think all but your delay and maybe your envelope filter can work infront and the preamp, but like you said, you can experiment. do you dislike the distortions on the vamp. i thought they were pretty good. especially for round about jammin w friends or some not so serious recording. hell, i hit the stage with it a few times and people thought i sounded great.......until i told em what i had:ROTF: funny how people can think you sound great then all of a sudden go "oh, now that i think about it....."
i personally think it sounds good enough. better than alot of other stuff in that price range.

yeah if you can just set up presets and put some pedals between the pre and power to add just a lil i think you'll be set.

Naw man, I totally dig the v-amp's distortions. Whether they be just a simple OD or a full blown Mesa thick saturation. I just like to have the option available to me to grab a specific sound with a simple toe tap....say if I have a decent clean with delay and chorus going on...then need a thick chugga chugga chugga rhythym to add to it...I dont want to have to go and make an entire new preset to do so yanno?

BBE recommends running the maximizer as close to the end of the chain as possible. I've run my sonic stomp in all parts of the chain, it works good at the front too.

yeah i hear ya, but whether its a toe tap to a single pedal or a toe tap to a number on the controller it would seem the same with less set up time to me. we all have our ways tho. as long as it sounds like you want it to
