  • Joining the Axe-Fx camp

Just placed an order for the Standard (it was painful enough, just couldn't do the Ultra)

I am WAY excited, lol! Hell, the wife doesn't care, I had to tell someone!

Ain't that they way it usually goes.

First off, I'M excited for you!

But yeah, my wife really doesn't show any interest in any of my music gear either. She could care less about what comes in or out of my collection. She may ask an occasional question, but I can tell it's more to make conversation than anything else.

Just the way some of them are wired, I guess.

What the guy that makes these needs to do is take a few months off trying to write software updates and figure out a way to make them for $1000. He would be able to sell 10 times as many at that price.

This point has been talked about a buuuuuuunnnch at the fractal board,,what it comes down to is Quality over quantity. Cliff set out to make the best unit he could using the best parts for the job, in that the Axe has all the best components in it, and compromising with a cheaper part would compromise the integrity of the unit and signal chain as a whole, and he was just not willing to degrade the product to sell more units. That's mainly why they only sell direct(+ 1 distributor in Europe, and one on the west coast) and not mass marketed(Musicians Friend, GC, etc) there is almost no overhead this way,,hell its only like Cliff and 3-5 guys at Fractal anyway,,,,,,The man has a vision and Integrity...gotta dig it.

But I hear what your saying

Yeah, but the processors and memory alone must have dropped a great deal in price since he started selling the units. I guess if he starts passing those cost savings along with a less expensive redesign then it cuts in to the margins.

Hell even at their current price I'm still saving to get one.

Thing is, he probably is not looking to sell a ton more units since there was a several month waiting list for them up until this past year. They are pretty caught up now but as I recall Cliff had to get help/farm out subassembly of the units to do it. He updates the firmware regularly , and for free I might add. Heck, I'm already several updates behind on my Ultra unit as it is now. The guy just keeps improving it and improving it. As others have said, you gotta admire his desire to keep the product top notch and not start degrading its quality in favor of more units sold

Actually, no, just the Tigersharc chip alone is still like around 4-500 bucks

It will be WELL worth it

The Axe is a great piece to add to any guitarist arsenal. Regarding the price, it's comparable to any other high end fx unit, which it is no doubt. Besides it's stellar fx, the pre amps are top notch and most of all, "I have never had so much fun with any one piece of equipment".

Top model of the TigerSharc costs bout $330 in lots of 500 chips or less, at least according to their website.

I have a feeling that he's making quite the profit on these as far as parts cost goes. Most of the price probably pays for his time creating the programs.

The Axe-FX Ultra costs the same as an Eventide Eclipse and the Axe-FX's quality and quantity are on part with the Eventide.

+1 on that bold text. He seems to be constantly tweaking and searching for ways to improve the sound quality and feel of the Axe-FX. Cliff is not a man to rest on his laurels.
