Your problem is the main reason I nixed my pedal efforts on my combo. My loop is too finicky, so I had to run in the front. When you run a modulation effect, it needs to be after OD. I liked my amp's pure OD for the majority of songs and didn't want to be married to a Dist pedal for everything just to get a nice delay & phaser.

What is the problems with your loop? Other than line or instrument level problems, I had never heard of so many issues with an FX loop, now I am hearing about them left and right

Another thing you shouldn't do is put a chorus before distortion

imagine having a variying wave effect of your original tone being chopped up
        by overdrive/distortion

a pitchshifter without varying wave before distortion can sound great phasers and flangers (though less effective before the amp) works since they do not alter pitch

Some amps have better loops in them than others. Some amps have loops that are finicky, my Bogner Uberschall is like that. Also, most pedals were designed to go in front of the amp. Very few such as the Eventide ones give you the option of switching them from instument to line level. Also, some amps have series while others have parallel effects loops, still others like the Randall RM100 give you both. My Marshall RR amp has no loop so thats not even an option. Lots of variables!

I have my delay in front, rigged up with a pedal to adjust level. It works fine with me.
