MXR EQ- 6 or 10 band?

Is the 6 band EQ suitable for jsut slightly shaping your guitar sound for solos or whatever. I notice that on the 10 band the other 4 frequencys are lower than the 6 band. I'm not into all this low thundering bass sound stuff, so I am jsut wondering if it would just be over kill for me.

The 6 is a lot cheaper too

I have the 6 band, and use it as a mid boost in the loop. Works good for my needs, so you should be fine for just pushing up the mids a bit or whatever you wanna do. But of course, if you want to really fine tune your sound the 10 band might be a better choice.

Just because the other 4 bands are lower doesn't mean you have to use them to boost the bass. You can use those 4 bands to cut low end just as easily. But the answer to your question is yes, you can use the 6 band for some tone shaping for solos.

I have the 10 band and really like the gain and volume sliders that the 6 band doesn't have. I also find I do use the higher sliders (4k and 8k) to shape the harmonics. The 10 band is 18V too, which works in my old Boogie effects loop that typically overloads most pedals. So the extra headroom is good for my situation.

That said, I've only heard only good things about the 6 band, so would suggest A-B them before purchase.

6 has no level/gain boost that the 10 has. 18V operation on the 10 = more headroom I believe. I personally cant see the difference b/n the 10 vs a GE-7 in the loop.

that said, in the loop, a Boss GE 7 works very well for me. But in front of the amp, you cannot find a quieter pedal than the 10 band. The GE-7 and any eq pedal for that matter with levels boosted will give a ton of noise. I have the KFK one and its got two o/ps so you can feed it into two amps at the same time also.

A good thing about the 6 band one is that it runs on 9V, so if you like me have a single power suppy for all your pedals, you can use it for the eq as well. Most power supplys don't support 18V, my sure doesn't anyway. Personally I don't need the extra fuctions of the 10 band one and just appreciate the space that I save on my pedal board (both the power supply and the fact that the 6 band is smaller), but it's up to you which one you want.

And I have also heard about Boss eq:s being more noisy than the MXR:s, by band mates Boss sure caused quite a bit of noise when put in front of the amp for a rather big mid boost.

The 18v is a big deal for using in an effects loop.

I'd say if you are on a budget, 6 band for preamp (guitar level signals), 10 band for effects loop.

Actually, the extra 4 bands are 2 lower and 2 higher than the 6-band. My brother in law has the 10-band and right now I'm using a DOD rack 31-band. I agree with jgcable that more is better but when tweaking around with the rack EQ, everything lower than the 62Hz and above the 8KHz don't really make any change. But it seems like on the MXR, they do. I'd say that for complete tone shaping, definitely go with the 10-band. But if you are looking to boost mids for solos, the 6 band should do what you're looking for.

Has nothing to do with the loop. I was just saying, the 18 volt EQ is MUCH better in the loop than a 9 volt, because it can handle wider voltage swings without clipping.

If you can afford it, get all 18 volt stuff (if you have a choice).
