  • running preamp into amp head

Ok this may sound like a noobish question, but I am new to poweramp/preamp rack setups. I'm looking into buying a preamp, possibly an Engl E530 Tube Preamp. Could I run this into the fx loop into the power section of my head, and into my cab? If so could you please tell me how to go about this.

Yes, you would just plug your preamp into the effects loop return. You are essentially bypassing the preamp section of your head and sending your preamp signal to the power amp section of your head. Hope that helps.

...yet it never seems to sound as good as the real thing.

+1 on the Engl 530. I have one running into a Mesa 20:20. The 530 is a great pre-amp with a great clean channel as well as tonnes of gain on the lead channel. Everything I have read and heard says the 530 is a way better sounding amp then their high end (midi capable) models.

I use my 5150 as a power amp, it works great b/c you can still use the presence/resonance controls on the 5150, which helps shape the sound a little more...
It's not your job to be as confused as Nigel....
