  • Every Which wah but loose?

So been thinking its about time to make some additions to my pedal board.

    Wah is the Effect.

    Which is the question?

Mostly for Metal, which draws me to the Crybaby from Hell
but what alternatives are there that match its functionality and is dunlop
employing some serious marketing strategy with all these different signature wah pedals
I mean how different can they be ?

in short do I get a crybaby from hell or is there a cheaper alternative that matches its sonic output?

I still have my Morley WAH-SP which IIRC is similar to the Bad Horsie, it's spring-loaded and there is no on/off switch... I wouldn't go back to a separate switch unless I had to. Plus I've had it since 1990-something and it still works.

I've used 3 wah's - the best was a beat up 70's Cry Baby. I upgraded to a Bad Horsie and it was thin and didn't have the range. I also bought a cheap Chinese wah for messing around at home. It broke from lack of use. A friend had the best wah I've ever heard. It was one of those handwired boutique wahs with true bypass and other features. It wasn't cheap.

i have faithfully used a VOX V847 since the early 90's. i recently had to replace the switch, but other than that it has been killer. i prefer the throaty roar and thick vocal quality it has. it does not give the shrill, piercing high end that adds noise. it is very smooth and exceptionally vocal.
        GEAR:

some guitars...WITH STRINGS!!!! most of them have those sticks like on guitar hero....AWESOME!!!!

some amps...they have some glowing bottle like things in them...i think my amps do that modelling thing....COOL, huh?!?!?!

        and finally....

i have those little plastic "chips" used to hit the strings...WHOA!!!!

I have a Crybaby from Hell, works great and has many controls for many different configurations, built solid doesn't feel like it will ever break.

Its basically a Dunlop Wah jacked up on Dimeroids!

I just got the Morley George Lynch Dragon 2 for X-mas. Its got a great sound, but it's real low-middy and has a long uncomfortable sweep for me - i.e. I don't push it all the way down naturally - I think I like a quicker aciton - more on-offy than wide sweep - I mean, its not like my regular time-keeping foot tap.

Anyway, I also really liked the sound of the Dunlop Kirk Hammet wah - dug it - lots of high middy and high.

After running this by my GAS source, he too mentioned RMC as first choice.

See, this is why I like the Morleys and do not like the Crybaby and the ones like it. I don't want a quick sweep, I'm looking to boost a specific frequency, which changes depending on where I'm at on the fretboard and what I'm trying to do (pop the lead out in front of the rhythm guitar or fatten up the tone a little) so the more range I've got the easier it is to zone right in on where I need to be. But it IS awkward to use the Morley to do the waka-waka 70's porn movie soundtrack stuff.

So the "best" wah kind of depends on the application...

My Crybaby 95Q has served me very well, I like that it's switchless and has a tone that I like.

But recently for a very specific musical context I want to make the guitar sound more like an analog synth, and by putting my crybaby after the distortion, it does it pretty well but it also gives a big volume boost which I don't really want... I'm not sure If I should get another wah or just completely different filter effect pedal for that. Right now I have to use an distortion pedal and turn down the volume on it so when my wah is maxed it matches my amp's volume level.

Well, sort of... I also prefer a wider sweep range on a Wah like you but as to which is better also brings up other variables. Some wahs are very noisy, some are big tone suckers, etc... Thats why I like the Fulltone Clyde Deluxe. Its quality built, quiet and has true bypass when off. Plus you gotta love the switch that gives you three different types of wahs Jimi, Shaft, and Whacked The Shaft setting should give you that 70's sound you seek btw
I have other Wahs as well but I've sort of given up on the standard Dunlop unit. Another option is the CAE/MXR wah. Its about $100 cheaper than the Fulltone Clyde Deluxe.

I spared no expense and dropped $30 on a Behringer Hellbabe wah! :ROTF: It goes "wah wah" when I step on it and has a 5-way frequency knob to shift the range. I'm not Kirk Hammett so it's not like I'm on the thing that much anyway.

Teese Wizard Wah is the best (IMO) wah for metal use.
