  • 5150 Distortion Support

I'm looking for a pedal to make my Lead channel a little more crisp ala Black Album.

So far I'm doing pretty good getting to the clean clear Heavy Distortion I'm looking for but still feel like I'm missing something.

I have and 89 MIJ Fusion with an EMG81 with a Hush and Sonic Stomp in my effects loop.

Basically is there a type of pedal that will support my Lead channel without destroying it?

I have an original 5150 with original tubes.

I know its a lot to ask to try and get black album sound out of a 5150 but Dammit I'm Trying

What tubes would you guys recommend for Metal?

I'd start with an EQ of some kind. I like the Electro-Harmonix Tube EQ parametric pedal, but even a cheap Danelectro Fish & Chips or something like that might give you what you want.

MXR 10 band EQ would be a good start.

Well I got a MXR 10 Band EQ and some TAD 6L6GC-STR Power tubes and Mullard 12AX7 Pre-Amps Tubes on the way I let you guys know how it turns out.

        Thanks

Trade in the 5150 and your pedals for a used Mark IIC+.

Nice one. A 5150 will fetch not more than $600 - $650. The last auction for an original IIC+ I watched end on eBay was $4000+. You can get modified ones for $1800 but not worth it.

You dont need a IIC+ for the Black album tones. Mark III, IV or V can easily get you there.

MXR Micro Amp for a boost doesn't hurt either. I like it because of how transparent and simple it is.

Where would you guys recommend putting the MXR EQ? Loop?

                  Fuck that..leave it bone stock!!

IMO The BEST 5150 tone there is w/ Matching 5150 shefield cab and a BBE 422 in the loop..period!

Been there done that 5X over..don't want it anymore.

The cheap Sylvania tubes in that thing rule..that amp was tuned to those tubes, speakers..all other mods and combinations degraded its tone.

BTW I never heard anyone make a 5150 "sing" like Mike Amott!

This is ALL stock 5150 back in '98..go right to the fuggin' solo at 2:30 ..THAT's a great 5150 lead tone!!

Well I pulled the old tubes out and they were not Sylvania they were a mixture of Electro Harmonix and 1 JJ in the preamp and sovteks in the poweramp

Now with all the new tubes and the EQ its smoking HOT!

I ran my EQ through the loop. How did you end up with your, front or loop? Sounds good.

                              Sounds great.
I can get that sound pretty easy with my Peavey ultra + and it has well worn Mesa tubes in it.On the tight setting that is.
