Keep in mind that a single preamp tube will not give you true tube distortion. You need a minimum of two tubes (like the Seymour Duncan pedals) to do that.

Sorry Alex, but that makes no sense at all. My Vox AC4TV head has one 12AX7 and gets quite distorted. It all depends how much signal is run through the tube, and 12AX7s clip pretty easily.

Why is that so?

Because the signal is cascaded through the tubes.
