  • Speakers for a cabinet, advice please?

I've got the offer of a Marshall 2X12 cabinet (presumably the 1936) but I'm not certain.

I can have it for £130 with the two 12" Celestion 75W speakers which work at 8 ohms. My amp is an AVT 150 which needs a 150W 8 ohm cab, so this would be perfect.

But I don't have £130 right now and the guy seems to be in a rush to sell it.

So he offered me the cab with just one Fender 12" 8ohm 50W speaker in it for £70.

OR, the cab with no speakers for £60.

I'm worried if I took the Fender speaker, at only 50W my amp would overpower it and something would blow. Are my fears correct?

The option of just the cab for £60 is really tempting me, but looking online for 12" 75w 16ohm speakers (to work in a pair, giving 8 ohms if I understand correctly, God this is confusing!) - these speakers on their own cost a fortune! Like at least £50 each!!! And I can't find ANY used ones, even old, used ones on ebay or Gumtree.

What do you guys think? No I don't NEED a cab, but I'd like one, I've always wanted one and I've just given up alcohol (yes, a Scotsman giving up drink!) and feel like treating myself.

The speaker will blow if you turn your amp up full blast and try to blow it. If you are conservative with the loudness it will work until you get the correct speakers.

Yeah I thought that, seems kind of a waste of time doing that. I'm gonna just take it off him with the Celestions, my mum says she'll loan me the money.

Looks like I've got a pair of G12M-70's off ebay. They only add up 140W rather than the 150W the amp is rated at, but I'm pretty certain I'm never going to be cranking my amp loud enough for that to be an issue...!

I' can't speak for the 70s, but I do like the standard 75s. I have a classic lead 80 celestion in my combo which on its own sounds very good. I think you'd be safe with anything in that power handling range.

I also hear a lot of good things about Eminence speakers.
