  • Marshall Valvestate problems

    Hey guys, me again!

    First off, tl;dr:
My Marshall VS100 Valve State amp is making a very loud humming noise, regardless of volume or if the guitars pickups are on, (I haven't tried without a guitar plugged in, but I've tried with multiple guitars), and it will only do it if it's on either of the OD channels. Can anybody help me figure out what's wrong with my amp?

If you have nothing to do, long story:
Well not too long after I posted that "which amp" thread, I guess my Marshall saw it and crapped out on me in jealousy.

Basically, it's a 3 channel amp: Clean, OD1 and 2. I always used a distortion pedal with the amp, because the OD wasn't BR00T4L enough for me, but it was always perfect for classic rock, and at the moment I want to rip out some Judas Priest without sounding like a power house of distortion.

ANYways, the problem is when I go from the clean to either of the over drive, doesn't matter what volume, a loud, LOOUD humming sound emits from the amp via the speakers. Doesn't matter if my pickups are off, the volume on both guitar and amp is all the way down, doesn't matter what guitar either! If the OD is selected it makes that noise.

Does anybody have any clue as to what I could do to fix this? It's a Valve State amplifier, being Solid State and I think it has a power tube or something. I was thinking that might be the problem, like the tube finally went, but I have no clue because I'm OBLIVIOUS when it comes to amps.

There I go rambling again But can anybody help me with my problem? Thanks in advance

I think you have the 12AX7 as a pre-amp tube in that amp so maybe try a new tube first.
I'm no amp expert so maybe some one else can help.

If it does have the tube for the distortion then that would be a good potential source of the problem because it likely wouldn't be used for the clean channel.

I checked what I think it an online manual for the amp, and it said it has a single ECC83 valve in the pre-amp. Is that what you mean? A new tube would make sense. I'll take the thing apart and find the tube.

Also, here's the manual for anybody that needs it, (PDF Format):

That's what I'm thinking, but mainly because of Randall's Valve State amps having a SS clean channel, and a tube distortion.

Ok, I got the tube out. Can anyone tell me how I can tell if the tube is blown?

If it looks burned and the glass is black it would be a gonner.A tube tester is the only way to really tell.

It wasn't burnt or black, but I know now it's broken... Because my cat knocked it off my desk and the glass is smashed

LOL I love cats though, so I'm not too ticked.

I'll try and get a new tube tomorrow, I'd really like this thing to be functional.

That's not bad, I just hate spending money. I really hope that's the problem though.

Just an FYI an ECC83 is the equivalent to a 12ax7. So either will work.
