If you can swing a bit more than $1200, get a used Splawn Quick Rod. they do marshall tones better than marshall. Splawn has far better quality IMO, and WAY better service. the tones dont ever begin to compare, splawn just walks all over a marshall..

I think its the best I've ever sounded. When I first plugged in, it was like insta-Demartini. Though it helps that I am just a cheap knockoff of him and Neal Schon... lol
Nothing wrong with a black headshell. Although mine is snakeskin I did find a guy on another forum a while back selling a black SLO headshell as well as a purple one for a really good price so I bought both of them Now I can convert mine at will between snakeskin, purple, and black.
When I first plugged into the amp it sounded so good I think a couple hours passed by before I put the guitar down. Just awesome sounding amps. What cab/speakers are you going to run yours through?

I use Peavey cabs. I've fallen in love with the cabs that came with the old Ultras.

The Sheffields have sounded great so far, but absolute worst case I'll do some research into what speakers typically go best with SLOs, and find an appropriate cab. But I am confident the Sheffield's will treat me well as usual.

I just can't believe I've come into an SLO, honestly (no stealing lol, no parents buying it for me), at this point in my life. I should be set for awhile... just have to grab an AOR eventually as a backup.

and Grim, that SLO was in the Markham Long & McQuade at a very good price, I'm happy I showed it to my buddy when I did (and then we traded some shit and I wound up with it), because they had a handful of other Soldanos that are mostly gone now (I think there is a combo of some sort left)

Shit... Probably about the best thing is to just start cruising the local guitar shops and see what is out there. Tone is a real personal thing. Some guys just say brutals and pick up a mesa recto but, then hear an Engl and freak for one. I personally thing Marshall sounds like sledgehammered shit but, people like them so, good for them. Keep saving for now until you hear something that really resonates with you and just don't jump at whatever someone tells you to buy. You will hate yourself later.
              Insert annoying equipment list here....

I completely agree, especially with your opinion of Marshall stuff LOL. I appreciate what they have been used to record historicaally speaking, but I don't want to drop 423 pedals in front of an amp, power brake it AND have to get specific cabs for it, just to have it sound ok. I am happy knowing that my tone is better than lots of the bands I listen to

I have an old Peavey 4x12 with Scheffields in it which I bought new about 16 years ago. I never tried my SLO through it though. Hmm, you're giving me ideas I did try my Mesa Dual Recto through it before and didn't like that.

I can't say that I agree with that statement about Marshalls. There are so many different ones that I think you'd need to be more specific about which model. There is a big difference between something like an old Plexi or JMP vs. newer Marshall offerings. I have a Marshall Randy Rhoads JMP and while its not the highest gain amp in the world it cuts through live more than anything else I have. I have been gigging this Marshall for over a year now at a rate of about 90% of the time, the other 10% is divided among my other amps.

give it a shot and report back! 5150 cabs have sheffields if I remember right, so they *should* work ok with a real SLO

My marshall 1960a sounds way better than my 5150 4x12 with my soldano. I havnt sold the 5150 cab yet because its upstairs and its a pita to take down a staircase that turns 90 degrees

Why does every unboosted amp, no matter how poor, do a "good Ac DC"? LOL!

because ACDC's tone is, in reality, crap?

Ah, I've actually never been to the Markham L&M. I only frequent the Toronto and Burlington L&Ms.

I can imagine a Greenback would work well with an SLO.

PS: I love the Yorkville cable. They are getting pretty common around this area! I've picked up a few myself. I still love BRTB cables, they come with a lifetime warranty and have served me well. (And are actually out of Markham)

Rectos and ENGLs do way more than just brutal metal though. If anything, I would say the 5150 is the amp everyone jumps on because it's "brutal".
