PS: I love the Yorkville cable. They are getting pretty common around this area! I've picked up a few myself. I still love BRTB cables, they come with a lifetime warranty and have served me well. (And are actually out of Markham)
I hit the Cambridge and Brampton L&Ms everyonce in awhile, but living near London only puts me near Stratford really, and that L&M is pretty crappy, just because its so small.

    and yes, Yorkville cables rock

Yeah, it is higher gain, its not a recto or Krankenstein or anything like that, so you would need a TS or something similar for heavy saturation. the JCM 800 is just a single channel amp that could be pushed to just past 'overdrive' but needs help for distortion, and an actual distortion pedal (not overdrive) for serious liquid saturation.
Based on this, and the amps I've been trying out, I think I'm going for a Blackstar HT-60 combo, works out $1137 for a new one. And by fuck, its LOUD. So easy to get distortion when plugging a guitar direct, no front loading needed at all.

If everything goes well, I should be picking up a 1983 JCM 800 2203 this weekend....

id like to find one for a good price, they are a great platform for modding one into a high gain amp. Plenty of room room for "KT" tube models as well.

Well i picked her up on Saturday. Great shape. Set it up on my Mode Four cab, switched the setting on the back of the head to 8 Ohms, to match the cab, turned her on and heard a pop.

Now it plays with very little volume, even cranked up all the way. I can't remember if I turned it on the correct way, with the power first and standby turned off for a few minutes.

Any ideas what it could be? Hopefully I didn't trash the head...

This doesn't matter. Standby is just a "ready" switch so you can turn the amp on without it making noise. Turning the power on and standby off at the same time will not damage the amp - you just won't hear anything until the tubes have warmed up - usually about 15-20 seconds.

I'm assuming you did plug the speaker cab into the head, right? And you are using a speaker cable, not a guitar cable from head to cab?

And of course, you tried it before you bought it right?

It could be a tube has worked itself loose while transporting. Open up the back and make sure all the tubes are seated in their sockets. You can pull them out (while the power is off) and push them back into their sockets.

yeah, i plugged the cab into the head. The cord is a cord, lol. Don't know if it's a "speaker" cable specifically.

I will check the tubes tonight to make sure they are seated correctly.

Thats the thing, I wasn't able to try it before I bought it, the guy sent me a video of him playing it, but he said it was played low because he was running it on low wattage speakers. Now I think I got screwed. Oh well, I have my JCM, now I just gotta get it working.

This is actually very important. Make sure you use a speaker cable.

Well, does anyone know a good Amp Tech in Houston? I've talked to a couple, but wanted to know if anyone knows of a good one...

update: Got home and unplugged her. Took off the back cover and wiggled all the tubes and made sure they were fully seated. Took out the fuses and checked them. Everything looked ok. None of the tubes appeared to be loose. Then I fired her up to watch the tubes glow. They were all glowing uniformly, no weird colors, etc.

Turned off the standby and had the damn thing set to like 9 volume and just about knocked my ass off the chair. Needless to say, the volume issue is fixed, lol. I guess a tube (or tubes) was loose, causing it to lose power and volume.

I was able to pick up a pretty clean JCM 900 slant cab yesterday, so I should start having some fun this weekend!
