My preference has always been the head of my choice and the cab of my choice. What I mean by that is 90% of the time I use one of my heads for a gig but, the cab choice is the wild card. I use a 1X12/2X12/4X12 depending on the venue. 90% of the time I use one of my 2X12 cab's. With respect to the ones I own, I like their sound just as much as one of my 4X12's, so if I need to really LOOK cool--that's when a 4X12 comes out.
I say go with the Marshall head and audition a few 2X12's and you're done. Cab tones are personal preference but, I'm telling you the biggest sounding yet smallest sized 2X12 around is a Mesa 3/4 Back 2X12 (I have 2 of them). That's what I use 90% of the time (and I have a lot of cabs mind you).
