  • Jerry Cantrell Tone

I always liked his tone and heres a vid of him showing some songs ,Im guessing there aint multiple amps being layered here. Anyone have any idea what amp he is using for this shoot? I really like how thick the tone is.

I was on Dunlop's site a couple nights ago looking at JC's wah page. It had a link there telling how he did his sound and was naming amps with a little detail nothing too in depth.
I want to go out nice and peaceful in my sleep like my grandfather, not screaming and hollering like the passengers in his car.

I didn't look at the link but I seem to recall in the past hearing he used a Fish and MOSValve. I own a MOSValve and to be honest, I can't get a big sound using it. I call it my "spare tire" amp. Side by side with a tube power section, the MOSValve is out matched. But I have to say I've always liked his sound.

He used to use the Fish for sure. And of course he has the advantage of having Jerry Cantrell's fingers.

Yea Im just talking about the amp from the link. I know what he uses otherwise but I cant see him bringing loads of amps to a quick you tube shoot. If you listen to all of the parts ,even when he hits your standard D chord its still huge and thick. Maybe Uberschall ,doesnt sound like hes playing too loud. Maybe he has a few pedals there too. Not trying to cop his tone ,just looking for that thick tone he has.

He's currently using the Friedman Browneye (formerly the Marsha) modded by Dave to sound a little "meaner" than the standard version (although they are very close).

In the last interview I saw, the Marsha was for cleans and a Bogner Shiva was handling the heavy tones. I would love to have his tone!

He's using 2 Friedman Marshas currently. I think they feed into Greenback loaded Bogner cabs. His rig regularly changes however, but one of the things that seems to have been consistant is the presence of a modded Marshall in the studio. With exception to his solo work which was primarily XTC & Shiva, his studio work is a mish-mosh of layered amps from all I've read. Everything from Ubers to Vox.

He's AWESOME. Probably my all-time favorite.

The best JC tone I ever heard is the live version of Barracuda with Gretchen Wilson. It may be one of the best live guitar tones I have ever heard.

I know for sure he used a bogner modified marshall on Facelift. He also used it on dirt with some other amps. He has been known to use a SLO, 5150, Recto and other high gainers in the studio while layering. I think the best bet to get close to the Catrell "sound" would be a bogner XTC since he seems to always go back to some sort of bogner, and that amp covers more ground then any other in the bogner line up. I'm pretty sure he uses greenback loaded cabs as well.

Probably one of the best covers of a classic song I have ever heard. Watching that video really makes you want to play live and it shows what great live guitar tone and great playing is all about.
