    Marshall DSL 50 watt

    vs.

    Mesa Single Rec

Looking for something with hi gain and singing/buttery lead tones. Also thinking about 6505 and the new Carvin V3M but I think the Marshall and Mesa are at the top of my list.

Would like to hear from people who've played with these a lot. Thanks!

    Hey man!

My son just bought a new 6505+1 1-12" combo and it rocks!!! Better than all the originals I had. The gain is all 100% usable (unlike the originals) . Hooked it up to one of my Marshall 1960 cabs and it made our teeth hurt. I never cared for 50, 60wt tube amps until now. They re-tweaked these bastards (5150). Nice reverb and cleans too. AND...AND..the first usable "crunch" mode with enough gain that conveys the crap I play. It sings for days (soldano-ish). Crunch channels always sound flubby to me..unless you add a ts-9, 808, od-1..ect. He grabbed one at GC for 550 out the door. I suggest a NS-2 as well. Like anthing with gain ..it''l squeal at loud levels.

It mixed with the Uberschall very well. The Uber has very low mids and the Peavey has a nice warm upper mid that sounds pretty pleasent. I was surprised. I wrote of 5150s for a while..but these 6505s are nice IMO! It is much like the sound of the Uber and my Marshall together...if you get the idea.

Personally, I don't like any DSL/TSL. That era Marshall just doesn't do it for me. The newer JVMs are cool ($ kinda high). I heard great things about Carvins..they make quality stuff ..Best bass amps in the biz!!..and I'm not a fan of Mesa...Boogies yes..Mesa no.

For a great grab n' amp that's loud enough for any band under 6 bills..6505 is cool. I had a 2-12 5150 combo..didn't like it, and heavy as hell!

I haven't checked other stuff in this range..like Blackstar, ect. But Peavey, Marshall..Carvins have a great track record that's older than alot of us.

my kid did the huntin' and buyin' on his own. He just showed up with the fucker. I never saw him so careful with something. He did good.

Out of those choices I would suggest the Single Rectifier. Its an industry standard for so many styles and genre's of music. Built like a tank, great features, very versatile and outstanding resale value. Match it up to a nice Marshall 1960A cab loaded with Celestion V30's and you will have a very nice rig.

You should buy my Chupacabra 50. So many tonal options, but only single channel.

Beats up the DSL for sure, and a different animal than the Single Rec. I'm not a Recto fan though. That said, I'd take the Recto over the DSL. I have owned both. The Chupa falls squarely into hot-rodded Marshall world - Marshall voicing , but with a more liquid sustain. Can be barky if you dial in that tone too.

Both are cool amps. I've owned several of each...

DSL: classic metal, and classic rock crunch tones and better cleans then the Mesa.
Recto: modern gained out high gain tone, more scooped sounding and a lot more bass for the chugga chugga rhythm stuff.

I've never been a fan of the dsl/tsl models so would have to vote for the recto but if I like the new marshall jvm models way more then dsl/tsl series. So of the two you listed I prefer the recto but if you want to stay with a marshall or mesa I would recommend you check out a jvm before you pull the trigger on anything. The v3 is a killer amp as well and does great high gain with a really nice clean channel, if you are talking value I think this is the winner. I can't comment on the 6505 as I've never had a chance to play one.

              DSL Vs Recto

I'd go Recto..but I never gelled with either.

I did like my JVM 210 - the only Marshall I've liked in the last decade or so. Sounded GREAT!

BUT...Mine blew up. I'm not alone either. Be careful if you get one used/no warranty.

Thanks everyone for replies. I'm leaning towards Mesa ... going to have to save up, though. Also thinking of the new Jet City's, which are obviously not in the same class but they sound amazing.

The jca100hdm is a sweet amp and I have been very impatiently waiting for the jca22h to ship. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the jet city build quality, it really is well built stuff. I will probably take crap for it but I would say with all the problems the new marshalls are having the jet city amps might be a step up in build quality. They don't have all the bells and whistles but they do have tone and are well built. Can't go wrong with a mesa either though, they are very popular and have always been well built.

My Friedman modded JCA20H is nothing short of amazing. BE mod, Sat mod, and SS loop. Perfect. Tube upgrade coming at some point as well.

agree 100%. The JVMs do sound fantatastic. Reminds me of a grab N' go Marshall rack in a box with a smidge more girth and gain. A friend tours with them and never had issues. But a couple did come back to his store for repairs. But it was a revolving door w/ JCM 2000 series issues. IMO those series are the biggest blemish in Marshall history. But many professional players do absolutely fine by them. Reb Beach and Doug Aldritch instantly come to mind.

I play on an Orange Rockerverb 100. I can get Recto, Marshall and SLO tones out of it. At one point I was comparing it to my other heads (EVH 5153, Splawn Quickrod, Blackstar HT100) And the Orange pretty much blew the others away, at least to my ears (though the QR had a better live feel)
If you're looking for a marshall and a recto, maybe you should try a Randall Lynchbox.

Cool! I have a Rockerverb on the way!

I played my QR for a couple hours last night. Such a cool amp.

The Randall RM series of amps is a great "Swiss Army Knife" amp. Great for people who change all the time, and the nice part is that after your initial investment, it only costs you a couple hundred bucks for a "new amp". I had the RM100KH. Heaviest amp head built I think.

Have you looked at the VHT or Fryette SigX? Tons of sustain. Awesome amp. Why not a dual or triple recto? Most are 3 channel and used can be pretty cheap.
