  • Anyone owns a Peavey Vypyr here?

I'm just wondering how the 6505 sim sounds on those Vypyr? Is it decent or not? Don't tell me the AxeFX is better at this, I'm just thinking getting their cheap 30w head as a grab and go rig when I don't feel carrying my 6505 with me. If I want the real thing, I got it!

    Anyone can comment?

Peavey should definitely make a mini 6505. I'm sure they would sell like hot cakes!

After playing one at GC I'm in the market for a Vypyr 60 watt tube amp. I plan on getting a used one. Sounds great--like a real amp should with lots of low end punch from the tubes and all of the high pitched harmonics you get from a modeling amp. Seems like the best of both worlds especially for a practice amp. The downside is most guitars might sound about the same through it. The non-tube versions of the Vypyr and Line 6 sound too sterile to me. Just my opinion, YMMV.

OK thanks buddy. I never tried one. I'm looking at the cheap 30 watts head and it's all ss, no tubes. All the modeling gear I tried usualy makes all your guitar sound the same (I never played the newer HD serie or the AxeFX). I'm not planning replacing my beloved 6505 but was looking for a cheap alternative for jamming at home and carry on the go and then plug into whatever cab is available.

I looked also at the AMT P1 pedal (a pedal that mimics a 5150) but can not find one here. But for not more $$$ I would have a cute lil' amp with a bunch of FX...

I've had the 30w combo for the last couple of years, no issues at all, very versatile, it is a brilliant practice amp.

You'd either want to get the combo, or an 8 ohm 112 cabinet, because I believe it only works with an 8 ohm cabinet, so you could damage it just using whatever was available.

I've got 2 Vypyrs, both tranny. They sound pretty good, and there is def. a lot of variety
among the various models. I like the Diesel sim with a stomp-box sim in front. The Recto
sim is great too. I like the Vypyr better than the Line 6 amps I've tried, FWIW. I don't
know how reliable they are though, as I've had some glitches with mine, like stuff failing
to save changes etc. But for the money, they can't be beat, and are a lot of fun to
              mess around with...

                Thanks lefty!

I finaly was able to try the 30 watts head. At the store, they had a TripleX cab just like the one I own and use so I tried it through that cab.

I was quite impressed with the 6505 sim. Using the same settings I do on my amp it sounded very similar. Even the sales guy and a few other folks passing by were surprised that I was getting all those sounds from a 189$ amp!

But what was cool, the other amp sims were quite good. Really liked the deluxe one, the plexi and the brit.

You're going to laugh but what stopped me from buying it was the size of it, I just wish it was a bit smaller (more compact) to log around. And you have to get the mandatory Peavey pedal that goes with it to switch/control it...

But I'm still wondering if I should not get it... Decisions... Decisions... An awesome lil' amp for the price and it doesn't sound fake.

Now, I just want Peavey to bring a mini 6505 on the market, just like the small Blackstar/Jet City amps but with the sound of a 6505! That would be awesome...

So you prefered the Vypyr over the Mustang? So why not get another one?

The Mustang I is the smallest one with the least number of models and an 8" speaker, right?
Unlike the Vypyrs, the Mustangs have less features in the smaller sizes. Did it just not sound good, or did you not like having fewer features, or... ?

I have the little 15w Vypyr as a throw-and-go practice amp. Never had any problems with mine at all. I did a head-to-head with the Line 6 Spider 3 15w and found the latter was a bit too sterile for me, despite both being SS. The Line 6 went back, the Vypyr is still with me two years later.

I have one of the first generation 30 watt Vypyr combos. love the sounds, but not very reliable. It has never been gigged or thrown around, but is still plagued by the early tech problems. None of this started until after the first 12 months. Being fairly tech myself, I have checked all the connectors, jack, etc and found nothing. The software updates are nice and if they would just fix the noise gate issues, it would be super.

I have the 15 watt version and you have to turn it off and back on when first powered on to get it to work, because of some first run factory glitch, and you cannot get rid of the delay effect on most of the amp models, green or red channel, even though you have the effects turned all the way off. Pick any amp model, make sure you have the effects turned off. Pick a note, strike a chord, you still have a tiny amount of repeating delay going on.
