Hey guys! New member here with a few questions.

Ill start with a bit of an introduction. I've been playing guitar for about 4 years, I play rhythm and a some leads in metalcore style band. Me and my friend (lead guitarist) have been working on this band for a few years and it finally seems to be coming together and we're going to be trying to get some gigs in a few months if things keep going well.

Now for the problem, my current line6/bogner 212 combo amp has been being very temperamental lately and I don't feel like I could count on it so I think im going to use this time to just get something new err well, used. Lol

There closest actual music store to me is about 2 hours away so that also causes some problems so I thought I would ask some more seasoned players for their advice.

My plan is to get a decent tube head, preferable used, in the 200-400 range, 400 being the absolute highest. Im willing to sacrafice channels and onboard effects for quality tone if needed, the gain/distortion doesn't have to be spot on for my style, as long as the head will respond well to an overdrive or distortion pedal. Also, this amp will need to be able to be played in small venues such as small bars, small vfw hall, ect. be suitable for band practice, and for "bedroom practicing".

I have a 1x12 peavey cabinet that sounds pretty decent that I plan to use while I save up for a nicer 2x12 or half stack cab.

From the research I've done on the internet, I've came up with the peavey windsor (about 200 used), valveking used(200 used), and the tiny terror(350-400 used). With the music store so far im not really able to check anything out, and could potentially spend my budget just in gas on top of only being able to see what they happen to have in stock.

So tell me guys, and gals, am I on the right track? Any other additions that would suit me that are easily obtainable and within my price range?

Thank you for your time and I apologize for the wall of text. Lol

P.S. I thought id add in some names of bands music that I play and style after.

As I lay dying, parkway drive, the devil wears prada (less chuggy tho), occasional protest the hero, and sometimes just some good old rock n roll like nugent, zeppelin, ratt, and that sort of thing.

Keep an eye out for a 5150 combo maybe... You can plug that into a cab when you've saved up more, but in the meantime, that should kill most of the others you've mentioned for not much more money.

5150 head or combo was actually the first thing I looked into. I just really wouldn't be able to pull off the 550-700 for a used one. 400 would be hard enough to come up with. (I got in trouble with the law a while back and the law won and now takes most of my money lol)

But I do appreciate the advice and I will be keeping my eyes open.

Clean it daily, with plenty of soap. It hurts if you dont use enough. There Billz, took care of this one for you, maybe not up to your standards, I tried.

On a more serious note, the 5150/6505 would be a good choice.

Lol? I suppose that's an inside joke that im on the outside of?

And yeah lookin at uberproaudio, the 6505 is what a lot of players I like are using, sadly tho, that's in an even bigger boat then the 5150 and all I can afford is a boogie board. Lol

Also, what would be better, a low watt head cranked up or a higher watt head at lower volumes? Or would a higher watt cranked up with a volume pedal be ideal?

Ah I think I got the joke after I read it a few more times. xD

Peavey has amazing bang for the buck amps but I really think you're looking in the wrong direction with a windsor or valveking. Honestly, my old Crate BV120 blew the VK or windsor out of the water. I see 5150 combos all day for $500-ish so finding one for $400 isn't impossible. But if it was me, and I couldn't find a 5150 combo, I'd be looking at a 6505+ 112 combo (You can get one for $499 brand new on ebay or even make an offer, or a used should be in your range) or something in the Ultra series (rockmaster preamp, predecessor to the XXX/JSX). I sold my Ultra Plus 120 head for $250 and have seen many available in the series for that price range.

20-30 watts tube is FRIGGIN LOUD. You might want to look at Jet City, Blackstar, or Egnator. You can find some good used deals on that stuff.

Of the three you have listed I own one, the Valveking, played the Windsor and have only heard the Tiny Terror. The VK has given me nothing but trouble with electrical issues. The Windsor wasn't impressive at all. The TT sounded wicked for the low wattage. I would have to agree with the most of the group here 5150/6505 is an awesome amp for what you want to do. This is only my opinion. Good luck.

I was kind of worried that 100-120 watts was going to be way too loud. Which is why I thought the tiny terror may be good with the switchable 7 or 15watt ability. I've never actually heard a 5150 or 6505 but I have heard that they're great. Would they sound tinny with 1 12 like some heads do?

Look into the Blackstar HT5 series (I think it's called). If I recall the prices are no more than 400 and go on down. Used even cheaper.

Tiny Terror has great tone, I played one through a Mesa 2x12 cab and it sounded fantastic and had plenty of gain on tap. But playing out you will have to mic it through a PA in larger rooms. Especially if your bass player has a 400 watt plus rig because no matter how loud you go he will pull the "I can't hear myself" and keep turning up. It basically runs out of juice at what I would consider practice levels.

I use one of these combos and it is great for practice and gigging. If you need to move more air you can just plug it in to a 2x12 or 4x12 and get 50 watts of headroom. I don't know what they go for on the used market because I'm not selling mine.

Good specs and it will cover tones all the way up from super clean, through smoky blues breakup, coming just short of boutique metal targeted amps. (aka Bogner/Diesel/Engl) It takes pedals extremely well and has all the necessary versatility features like individual reverb (accutronics spring) settings for each channel, foot switchable gain boost, serial and parallel loops. They make a head only version of it as well. The head sells for around $800 in Canada brand new so with it being a lesser known brand they may be a good deal to look at used.

You all don't even know how helpful you have been.

Im gonna look into all of the suggestions and see if I can find some high quality clips.

I am kind of excited now because I've always heard how good the 5150 sounds, but never thought id be able to afford one.

I've also heard that the 6505 is a lot more tuned for chugga chugga style of playing.

Which of the two is meaner/more aggressive sounding? And which of the two would be more versatile? (Combo versions)

Any combo amp will sound less full, or tinny compared to 412 half stack. I will warn you, the 5150/6505 series can be fizz boxes if you go nuts with the gain, treble and presence all at once. Similarly to the ENGL Powerball and Fireball. On my 6505+ I run the gain at 7, treble at 5 to 6 and presence at 9.1- 9.2. My mid preference changes sometimes, so theres a range I have with that knob, and the bass and resonance are always dimed. Another note as well with the 5150/6505 series, they seem to sound best with their matching speakers and cabs. Ive got many cabs to choose from and the matching cab is exactly that, it compliments it quite nicely.

Theyre not "high" quality, nor a combo, but lets face it, its only one speaker being recorded, but theyre straight in with no editing. Heres a link to some clips Ive done in the last week with my 6505+ half stack.
