I'm looking for a tube combo that I can afford without having to go on a strict diet of surplus canned beans for months. Any suggestions? I'm looking for a very specific sound, my sound is sorta like if Santana, Holdsworth, and some 80's rock god combined into one person, with a secret jazz influence and a hint of Eric Johnson
. What I mean is, I want a smooth, sustaining drive sound, but I want to be able to brighten, bite-en, and tighten it up so I can play chug-a-lug stuff like an 80's rock god, but I also need a decent clean sound, I don't mean Paul Riario clean, I mean like Joe Pass clean. Like really jazzy, warm clean, but I also want to be able to play clean, clear rock rhythm stuff and country-type things. I also want this amp to have enough heaviness. Even though I like playing rock, metal, and fusion, I want to have enough gain and tightness so I can do more modern stuff, like my explorations into djent. I don't want the amp to be fizzy and undefined (think Line 6, yeesh). Basically a smooth lead sound, a chug-a-lug 80's rock sound, jazzy AND country cleans, and some tight, uber metal riffage. I've been looking at a few amps, but they don't seem to do it for me. I tried a Peavey 6505+ combo, it's a little too metal for me, WAAAAY more gain than I could ever use, but with less gain it sounds alright plus it's powerful, the cleans are kinda meh, I tried an Egnater Tweaker, easily the best sounding amp ever, but I can only find the 15 watt version, and it can't stay super clean at higher volumes, which is a must. Plus it doesn't have enough chug, maybe classic rock, blues, or fusion but not super chug-a-lug stuff. I was thinking the Marshall Haze 40, it has enough power, it's pretty versatile, it's a MARSHALL, plus it has a couple of effects I would actually use. However, I've only tried it with a Tele, would I be able to get the thick drive sound and jazzy cleans with my Charvel?
Any advice is appreciated, I can't exactly afford to experiment with different amps and I hate going to music stores.
