  • rack mount f/x unit used by 80's guitar players

what are some rack mount f/x unit processors used by 80's guitar players such as Reb Beach, George Lynch, Warren Demartini?

I want to get an ADA MP-1 and match it up with a rack mount f/x processor complete with a midi foot controller.

They used Eventide and Rocktron products plus ADA.
    I use this set up.
    Really? well screw Mark Twain.

what was that super-expensive Lexicon delay they were all using back then? I think Demartini still uses them

        The Lexicon PCM 70

I had one and it was simply awesome. Having said that if you want a nearly spot on copy for a fraction of the price, score a Digitech TSR-24S unit. It's a real sleeper in the studio industry and produces some killer plate reverb not unlike the PCM 70

I have it in my rack and while it is not easy to program due to the countless parameters, it does reward you for your efforts.

I've always wanted to get a TSR-24 to compare to my TSR-12, just to see what the main differences were, and if it was worth the extra $$.

Another 80's rack fx unit that's still in use today is the Yamaha SPX-90.

There were a few popular Alesis units as well, such as the MidiVerb (I and II).

                    i had a TC2290 in the early 90s....

i recently picked up a roland GP-8 - one of the first rackmounted guitar effects units from the 80s. it is pretty cool. NOTHING like the fancier units i have used in the past, but i like the simplicity and "vintage" sounds. it is basically 8 BOSS pedal in a digital rack format. the effects are:

                    envelope filter
                    compressor
                    turbo OD
                    distortion
                    phaser
                    3 band EQ (hahaha)
                    delay
                    chorus

since i use it in the loop of my amp, i don't use the OD/distortion effects. what i do use has made me very happy, especially since it is also MIDI controlled. the good part? i only paid $55.00 for it!!

it certainly is a limited piece of gear, and i am already looking for something more "studio" like to replace it. the digitech quad i had in my rack for years has landed in my studio. i DO miss the clarity of that unit, but the roland is a lot of vintage fun.
                    GEAR:

some guitars...WITH STRINGS!!!! most of them have those sticks like on guitar hero....AWESOME!!!!

some amps...they have some glowing bottle like things in them...i think my amps do that modelling thing....COOL, huh?!?!?!

                    and finally....

i have those little plastic "chips" used to hit the strings...WHOA!!!!

The Soldano SP77 was pretty happening back in the day. Like a fool, I sold mine.

hmm, I'd rather shell out the $ for Eventide pedals if I were to go that route

Rocktron Replifex is an awesome unit. I believe it came out in the early nineties, but really has great effects.
