  • Opinion on Roland GR-20

I want to add some midi synth capability into my rig and would like some opinions on the Roland GR 20. I'm aware that Roland came out with a newer machine (GR 55) that has better tracking capabilities and also know that Axon has a better machine for Midi synths. What drives my interest in the GR 20 is the following:
    1. Simplicity
    2. Only synth sounds, unlike the GR 55
    3. Price
The GR 55 has a lot of stuff that I know I wont use and it is more expensive than the GR 20. The Axon stuff is even more expensive, plus it is difficult to get the stuff serviced if broken.
My question to you guys is: is that GR 20 tracking and sounds good enough for a novice player with no experience handling midi synth devices? I'm basically looking for synth pad sounds I could you to composed tracks to use for practicing soloing and phrasing. Some piano sounds would be also cool just to experiment.
Thanks in advance for your feedback on this subject.
