The Powerball has more preamp distortion available, but the 6505 isnt running low on it. The lead channel character is different between the two. The Powerball has a grind to it the 6505 doesnt have, but the 6505 can be very fluid sounding. The 6505 is a great amp, the Powerball was just one of two amps Ive always wanted, so I went for it.

It was between a Powerball and an Uberschall for me as I needed something with crushing distortion, good low end, and a really good clean channel. Since Uberschall's are a little out of my budget at the moment (college loans and such), I managed to trade a 1976 Fender Deluxe Reverb Silverface I got through a trade and about $350 to get my Powerball from a guy on Craigslist. The only complaint I've really heard about the 6505's is the lackluster clean channel.

Bingo, Uberschall was my number 2 as well, and yes, the clean channel on the 6505s will get you by, but its left a lot to be desired.

Yeah the thousand dollar price difference between the Powerball and the Uberschall was a big issue for me, plus I hardly ever saw them used for under $2000. I do want to get an Uberkab to match my Powerball up to, but I haven't seen any used ones on Chicago Craigslist in awhile.

If I stumble across a 6505 for cheap I'll pick it up. Sounds like it would make a good backup. I have a Peavey Ultra 120 head as my backup now. Pretty solid rock and hair metal amp, just doesn't have the testicular fortitude I'm looking for, especially not for tuning down to Drop C#.

Im thinking about cabs too. I demoed an Ubercab with the Fireball and didnt cut it for me with that amp. With the Krankenstein however, it was night and day. Ill try the Uber again with the Powerball, but Im not expecting much. Im curious about Vader, Ive heard a lot of good reviews, but theyre custom order and employ a speaker Im completely unfamiliar with. Im gonna check out my buddys Avater soon as thats what he uses with his Powerball. He plays in drop C on a regular basis though, so it may not cut it for me either. I may just go with a Mesa cab at some point. For some reason, of which no ones really sure of why, they sound different than normal V30 cabs. Im not a big fan of normal V30s. My other guitarist in my band has the Egnater Tourmaster cab with V30s in it and to me, it makes all my amps sound tinny. Sounds good with his amps but not mine.

Haven't heard of Avatar. I will have to check them out. Most of the people I've talked to who have Powerballs match them up with Uberkabs, Vaders, Mesa oversized Recto cabs, Orange cabs, and sometimes the actual Engl cab (if you can find one). I'm not familiar with the speakers in the Vaders either, and most of the bands who use them are death metal, but by the same token I've talked to guys in traditional and power metal bands who said Vaders were beastly, so I'm willing to give it a shot. There was a guy with a Vader on Chicago craigslist I wanted to snag but I didn't have the dough and he didnt want any trades . I've played my rig through a recto cab once at a gig, but I didn't really have the time to really evaluate it. My 4x12 roadcase won't fit the oversized Mesa cab either, so I'm kinda screwed on that front. I'm interested to hear how some of the cabs you try it sound with the powerball.

Vaders are good. Avatars are excellent. I use Rectifier Oversized cabs.

I dont know, never played through either and the Vader site really isnt that informative. Avatar is another custom cab company like Vader, so youll be hard pressed to run across one chances are.

Yeah it seems I'm more likely to run across a Mesa or a Bogner than an Avatar, although I did spot some on Craigslist. I'll just have to keep my eyes open. My Peavey XXX cab works for the time being, but I want to upgrade and get something a little more suited for the Powerball.

I've used the Diezel Front-Loaded 4x12 for years with my Powerball with excellent results. I have it loaded with 2 Vintage 30's and 2 Diezel 80W speakers (sound similar to a V30 but with a bigger and tighter bottom and smoother high-mids and treble) in an X-Pattern. No other cab I've tried the Powerball with sounds as good. A close second would be the Mesa Recto cab, but I don't think they are quite as articulate.

Thanks, I've looked around for a Diezel cab as well. It's actually what I demoed my Powerball on when I traded for it. What do the Diezels come stock with?

They come stock with Vintage 30's, but some dealers will load them with whatever you want. I ordered mine from Tone Merchants.
