  • Jackson Reference 50

Hey all, I am a newbie here. I just picked up a Jackson Reference 50 for a ridiculously low price. The dude whom I bought it off of didnt think it worked. So, I took it to band practice, plugged it in, and jammed my ass off for 3 hours in a 95 degree garage, and the thing didnt sweat. I talked with Steve, the amp builder, who is a great guy and quite knowledgeable! I am putting in some RCA 12ax7a pre-amp tube per his recommendation tonight, and cant wait to hear what they sound like. The only thing is....I am getting married in a year, and didnt really NEED another amp, so I may/may not sell it, and am just wondering around how much these are worth? It does sound really good as is right now (with cheap chinese 12ax7's and Sovtek el-34's!) and I know it's only going to get better! I'd post a pic, but not allowed yet I guess?!?!

Anyone ever tell you you don't NEED to get married?

So call it a trade: she marries you, you buy amps

Both not needed, but a happy compromise

How much did you buy it for?

      That's what it's worth.

BTW - newbs coming in asking "Hey - I have something I *might* sell" is usually seen as fishing for a sale. Don't do it.

Nah, not fishing for a sale at all. I just like to know what my stuff is worth, especially for insurance reasons haha. Lots of rain coming down out here. I need a good backup anyways, but this may render my Traynor to the backup status.

Besides, I want to marry this gal. She actually supports me playing in a band. Hard to come by these days!

Well being you could pickup a crate bv120 for 200-250 id say that guy is worth about 150-200. Just my opinion tho. I havent ever heard anything outstanding about those amps. Good but not great.

Ok, well apparently nobody on here knows anything about these amps! It's all good though, I plan on keeping it. Switched out the pre-map tubes to old RCA's and damn, what a difference. The clean channel warmed up considerably! Don't use the lead channel much, as I just run through my pedalboard to the clean. Sounds better than my 70's Fender I had (sold THAT instead). Once I get a little more time, I'll make a Youtube video of the amp and post it on here.

Man you said you talked to the guy who built it so what other info are you lookin for? If you were expecting someone to say "that amp is better than my marshall/mesa" then youll be waitin a longtime. Its a decent amp. Nothin special. As with all amps though, you can tweak it to your liking.
