  • Hooking up two combo amps together?

    Hi all,

I noticed the back of my Mesa DC-2 combo has a slave output, which I presume to mean it can go to a speaker cab. And I could swear I did this back in my band days, but my memory is fuzzy... I can't even remember what I did yesterday, it's that bad.

I have another combo amp, a Marshall G50RCD, that I'd like to use as an extra speaker if possible. Into which socket on the Marshall would I connect to the Mesa slave output? I'd prefer not to blow up my entire condo building... limiting explosive damage to my suite alone would be more ideal.

Here are some pics of the Marshall (not mine) to get a better idea of the various sockets. The front panel has FX Send, FX Return, Line Out, and Footswitch (I think I'll try THAT one, LOL!). The back panel has CD Input, presumably if you want to plug a CD player or sound system into the amp so that it plays through the 1x12" speaker... I remember trying this once back when I first got the amp and was less than impressed by the sound quality.

There's no place where you can switch the Ohms, as I vaguely recall having to do this when using the Mesa plugged into the speaker cabs in my band days.

Thanks for any help in advance!

    In the FX-Return

but you're gonna have to bypass the marshall's Preamp that way
IIRC Mesa's Slave out is after the preamp to connect to a (multiple) poweramp(s)

      NOTP,

You have a tad bit of confusion going on here.

Slave out is not the same as Speaker out. Slave out is a preamp - out to be given to the input of a power amp. Speaker out is the output off of the power amp to drive another speaker cab.

Hellbat is correct - The Slave out (can also be thought of as an FX out) should go into the other amp's FX-Return. You could put a delay/chorus in there for a cool effect.

If you wanted to use just the Marshall's speaker, you would have to disconnect the red and white wires going to the speaker and rig up a cable to connect the speaker to a 1/4" phono jack to plug into a power amp output. One end of the cable would have ends like the red and white wires, and the other end would have a guitar lead type of connector.
