I seem to recall an earlier thread about the mkV (or possibly IV) where there is something you need to set up on the loop in order to get an extra gain stage out of it. Hopefully you can dig that up on a search or someone familiar with it will jump in...GTWGITS! - RacerX

Thanks Hellbat. From what I understand, if the effects loop isn't in hard-bypass mode, then there are two extra tubes involved, and there's an additional overall volume control plus a solo boost. (My comment about the lack of high gain was about the Studio 22, though, not the Mk V - I think there's more than enough gain there for me.)My other signature says something funny

For heavy tone, the Mark IV wins IMO. The Mark V has a little better clean and channel 2 is much improved, but channel 3 is not as heavy as the Mark IV. Also I am not the biggest fan of the FX loop on the Mark V or any other modern Mesa amp with the hard bypass. Hated it on my Road King and hate it on the Mark VCURRENT GEAR SET UP
