  • So my old ADA MP-1 produces a better Marshall tone than my Marshall JMP1?

Playing around with my main rig as well as my backup rig and something interesting came to mind.

My stripped down backup rig consisting of just a stock ADA MP-1 with an Rocktron Intellifex into a Marshall Valvestate 80, nails a more accurate 80's JCM 800 tone than my main rig with the Marshall JMP1!

More alive and rough and plenty more gain and crunch too! Makes the main rig sound so compressed and dare I say...digital compared to the ADA.

Gonna have to try the ADA in the main rig in place of the JMP1 and see what tones I get.

I read once that while the ADA is a true tube analog pre amp, the Marshall is all digital with a tube in there for tone shaping?

That sounds about right. I wasn't very impressed with the tone of the JMP-1.

My JMP sounded very dry, and in most cases, sterile and flat. Even a retube didnt help.
My old MP-1 was killer, I wish I had never sold it.
Its true the MP-1 is analog, the digital part comes after the initial preamp (or so I read)

The ADA was built by a guy trying to emulate a (very old) hot rodded Marshall Plexi. Id say he did a hell of a job. Even today the MP-1 can hold its own against any of the (overly priced) high end pre-amps out there.

I know Id love to have another one.

You guys would lick my sound!

To hear it put in action with Tore Moren (Jorn) or Jorn Viggo Lofstad (Jorn/Pagans Minds) live or studio...ummm wow.

The decripts above match the MP-1 IMO! They're OK..

Toeachyaownsssahhhhh..just have fun and shred. That's what it's made for. Don't play fuggin' Jazz all day like my damn son. It's sounds like the fuggin' weather chanel upstairs.

        Love Billy

I'd bet dollars to donuts the 80's tone you are nailing was also done on an MP-1. So many people used those in the 80's.

If that's the case, then sell the JMP back to me!!

Seriously though I thought about this a few days ago. Of all the gear I've sold, the only regrets I have are all the things I've sold to you!!

the JMP is a good preamp IMO...... Phil Collen still uses them live and in the studio after all these years. he has an unlimited budget and companies willing to give him gear, and he still sticks to those JMP1 live.

Billy Gibbons has one of the greatest tones I've ever heard, he owns thousands of guitars and hundreds of amps but he mostly uses JMP1 live and in studio.

I think all the guys in Maiden still use JMP1's in their live rigs as well.

Oh no! First off I learned my lesson about sellers regret. Second this guitar is honestly going to be the last one I buy if it ends up as great as I think it will.

JMP1's rule. Billz rubs his pee pee when he plays thru one.

Music, as is nature, is analog, and digital has no place in it IMO.
