  • Peavey XXL

Does anybody own one of these?

I sold my 5150 today... just didn't want to fix it anymore.

Can a XXL Head cut through the drums like in a garage?

My Crate Combo just doesn't do the trick.

How reliable are the Peavey XXL Heads?

There is one being sold here local I Might go look at if dude still has it.

    Thanks Guys

For an SS head, theyre not too bad. I owned one long before I was ever in a band situation, so I cant speak on that. I remember why I got rid of it though. The tone controls interact with each other too much for my taste. For instance, bringing down the bass brought up the mids, bringing down the mids brought up the bass etc. The sweet spot where they all work individually was really midrangy for my tastes back then. Today probably wouldnt be a problem as Ive found as I get older the mids go further and further up. Try a XXX, its basically the same thing but tube. You can get one around the same price as a 5150 used.

That sounds weird... I really just want a Loud, Cheap, and Reliable amp that won't shit on me, if such an amp exist.

Its always a crap shoot. There are just some lemons out there. You would probably be fine if you went out and bought a different 5150.

Its a ton different from a 5150 but it should be fine.

How about a Randall RG 100?

            Are these reliable amps?

Yes. The RG's are very reliable. The XXL has a more modern gain.

After all the trouble I went through with my 5150 I decided to try a new brand... I picked up a Randall RG 100 Classic... I'll post a vid when I get this bad boy.

                Thanks Guys for the input!

I have not played a XXL, but it is my shirt size..and it is tight!

I had tons of Randall RG80s, 100s, 120s..cool fuggin' SS amps! None of 'em ever failed on me.

Not that it matters now - you bought a Randall, which is cool - but I've been gigging and practicing with an XXL for the past couple years now and it has been a great amp. At some point, I'll have to start using my Carvin V3M that has been sitting idle for 8+ months now, but the XXL has just worked so well that I'm reluctant to change.

Yeah man I picked up the Randall for $150... the dude that had the XXL here locally never got back to me... I was watching a XXL on ebay and it is going for more than I wanted to spend.

All the reviews I've read about the Randall say they are super reliable which is ultimately what I am looking for... I don't play gigs or record anything just rock with my bro in our warehouse garage. I am sure that the XXL is awesome just wanted to try a different brand... I have only owned four amps in my life 3 Peavey and 1 Crate.

Crate Combo - Crapped out - not loud enough to play with drums anyway

5150 - Crapped out - obviously was awesome when it worked right

The other two are Peaveys: Backstage Plus and a Pacer - the Backstage Plus works great except when I turn up the reverb it makes a whining noise... the Pacer's volume knobs are scratchy.

I have read that the Randall RG 100 Classic does not have nearly the amount of punch as the ES. Maybe a pedal will have to be in order to get some Panterica tones... maybe not?

The guy I bought if from on ebay is sending it Fedex and it departed from Kansas City today so maybe I will get it on Monday... maybe tomorrow?

                        THAT WOULD RULE!!!

I had a Randall RG100 Classic 2x12. It's great if you want too sound like "Boston". Other than that it's gonna need some serious help. I put a V-amp 2 in front of mine and with the V30's it was pretty cool. I now have the Peavey XL (2 channel version of the XXL) and while it has a ton of gain, I'm having a hard time with it being fuzzy at low volume. Crank it, and it gets better and LOUD really quick.

Well I got this bad boy today RG100 Classic Head and I can't crank her up yet but everything is good nice tone and quite operation... From just the tad I turned it up on Distortion channel it sure didn't sound like Boston... though I did play the more than a feeling riff just to make sure...

Wow this Randall has got some major volume to it... needs some gain like RR_YJMFAN said so I went cheap and bought a Behringer ULTRA METAL UM300 Heavy Metal Distortion Effects Pedal, sounded good on youtube and was only $30 bucks...
