  • Peavey 6505+ 1-12" combo ..WTF discovery!!

OK, my son bought this combo at GC a few months ago..with his money. I admit it did sound pretty damn good, and much different than the original 5150s I know so well. In both bad and good ways. The good, was the gain is 100% totally usuable ..where the oriinals mushed out passed 6 1/2-ish. It has more higher mids than the originals that cut thru at loud volumes. I played it over my son drumming his ass off to really know if this amp can hold it's own. Yes it did. The accutronics reverb is very usuable. The "crunch" channel brought to me instant Heartbreaker. The Cleans are better, and my son always sounds likes he's playing Weather Channel jazzy shit. But it seemed overall was lacking the big thump and lows the originals had. OK with that said..read some more...godammit.

Moons ago, thru lots of money, trial, error, and luck, I discovered the best way to rum my 5150s was with a BBE 422 in the loop w/ matching cabs. Various Celestions, and cab confirurations work fine but I didn't find it optimal as the 5150 Shefields. With those I was able to push the lows, gain a tad more (just enuff) without flubbing out..with no OD stomps..all amp.

So, for Chrsitmas my son wants an extension cab, and a Boss NS-2, and BBE Sonic Stomp (my sis pick those up). Leaving me on the hunt for a 2 X 12 cab that would be a good match for him. A freind of his brought over a 2x12 cab loaded with Celestion GT-75s that he uses with his 60 wt B-52 1X12" combo. I was NOT impressed at all. In fact he picked that cab up because Vinny walks all over him at practice..even with the 2 X12". Of, course I've plugged the 6505 into one of my Marshall cabs when he first got it ..and of course it sound great. Problem is weight, portability...and it's mine.

This had to be where Dimebag made his discovery. I have two Peavey full range PA cabs that my singer friend (Ty), and I bought to sing thru. These cabs are just sitting there for years not doing anything. So what does it take other than a speaker cable to give this a fuggin' shot. They're 8 ohm cab, I set the combo to 4 ohm, and set the Peavey PA cab on it's side, and placed the combo on top. Wow, The dimensions are perfect..same corner gaurds and everything. So I turned the fucker on and ...WTF???!! OK, these cabs are typical PA cabs, nothing fancy at all. They're loaded with a 15" Black Widow and full range horn rated at 300 wts. I couldn't believe the huge wall of sound from this stupid shit. I kept pushing/pulling the speaker cable in and out. The Black widow and horn sound so scooped and crisp, and I heard nothing but a wash of mids from the combo's shefiled. But together..you'd have to hear it.

This was just a matter of luck, and convienence, that worked far beyond my expectations. I couldn't wait until Vinny got home from work. He was surpised just the way it looked and immediately took a picture of it. The PA can is carpeted in black ozite. But he shit when he pluggged in and played. In fact, he played in his work clothes for hours until he had to go to bed. He's set up in the basement and from upstairs ...it sounds like my Uberschall down there. He's quite the fast chugga gain monsta..and it's thick, and tight as hell. Just guitar into amp...so far. I'm thinkin' the 12" , the 15" and high range horn really opened up a wide range of freqs that a convential guitar cab can do..

Just wanted to share the info, surprise and experience.

More range, and more headroom available.
As you already found, you are hearing the amp more than the cab.

That's why I recommend running high gain amps, even at 5 watts output, though
        at least a 2x12.
I use a 5150 4x12 slant cab with my own 7 watt heads.
        With the Sheffields.

I rewired that cab for 8 ohm split stereo, 4 ohm all four mono.
I prefer the 4 ohm setting using the amp's 4 ohm tap.

Ive tried the ol PA speaker method, and if it wasnt for the horn, Id like it. Im becoming increasingly sensitive to high frequencies lately. The woofers themselves though, are pretty cool. Your typical full range speaker is rated 20hz-20KHz. Youre typical guitar speaker is rated 70Hz-3K. As you can see, your PA speaker has the ability to pass more overtones and harmonics, but that damn horn, ouch.

I've always loved running a 15" speaker with one or two 12" speakers. I've not tried any full-range or PA speaker system, though.
In the early '90s, a friend moved and told me he left a chorus pedal and a 15" Peavey bass speaker cab in his basement and I could go and take them if I wanted. He used the 15" speaker in his stereo, just removed the preamp part from the combo... well, I also found the preamp section, so I took that, shoved it back in the empty slot of the cab, used the stereo chorus combo for my guitar to go into my little guitar combo and the Peavey bass combo and loved the tone of them combined!
I now have a big Randall cab down in my basement that looks like a 4x12, but it's only got 3 speakers in it... it's a 2x12/1x15 (Eminence Legend speakers), and it sounds awesome with any head I've plugged into it! I've also got a 15" bass cab up in my living room that I also run with my old Marshall 8240 stereo chorus 2x12, and that also sounds great.

I know Dime used 4x12s combined with big 2x15 Randall cabs, and I'd love to find one of those someday.
