Sound City amps are Hiwatt - the owner of Hiwatt accepted a contract to build amps for the store Sound City. They are, AFAIK, essentially Hiwatts and the build quality should be quite good.
    I like EL34s.

I gigged with one for 5 years back in the lat 70's very early 80's running through a full stack of red Marshall 1960 cabs I got from the Buddy Miles band.
It was 120 watts and an exact = to a Hiwatt. Same exact amp. Just a different logo.
Super loud, super clean, no distortion at all and no effects loop. I ran an MXR Distortion + out in front and it was crushing.

I have a couple tucked away somewhere. JG is correct, "crushing" is the word to use (with a decent distortion pedal in front of it)
So I woke up,rolled over and who was lying next to me? Only Bonnie Langford!

            I nearly broke her back
