what I mean is, if your going to dream theater and metallica sounds, I think you can get them easier and more accurately with a Mesa Mark IV or V rather than a Blackstar or anything else as most of those tunes during that era were recorded on Mesa Mark series amps. petrucci and the metallica guys were big on them. there is a youtube vid where petrucci is demoing the Mark V, and he gets that "pull me under" tone really close by just plugging into the amp. obviously its set up for the tone, but he has no outboard gear and the sound is very close to what he had on the CD.

Check out am ENGL Steve Morse amp. Otherwise, look into the Egnater/ Randall MTS system.

Sounds like a job for the MK 4, but a Splawn Quick Rod might fit the bill too...or maybe the Nitro

I think you need to read his posts again:

it seems that all along, he has agreed that the MkIV is a good idea for the tones you're chasing.

2 other amps to look at.

                        Carvin Legacy
                        Bogner Ecstacy 101B

To my ears, the Carvin Legacy reminds me of Petrucci's tone. Straight out of the box. Its another one of those amps I should have kept.
Never owned a 101B but I heard them live and its the ultimate tone. Bogner is crazy good.

The Ecstasy 101B is one of the all time greats! Very expensive new but I've seen quite a few pop up used on some forums right in the $2400 range shipped/Paypal'd. Still a lot of money but about $1000 cheaper than new. That amp has great cleans and distortions.

Seconded. But before you go shopping, try EL34s in your Recto. I never went back to 6L6.
                              I like EL34s.
