  • Doug Aldrich neck pickup

Have annybody tried the Doug Aldrich neck pickup? I was thinking of switching the 59 for one of thoes in my san dimas style 1. I kinda like the warmth and mellow tone doug gets ut from his solos.

Doug is great, and I'm sure his pups are too, but I wouldn't know the first thing about using a neck pup lol.

I threw a pair of Suhr Doug Aldrich pickups in one of my Les Paul Custom 68 Reissues. They have quite a bit more bottom end than the Gibson pickups they replaced with more gain yet fairly clear at the same time. Thats the best way I can describe them. thats the only guitar I have those pickups in so I can't say how they'll react in your guitar.

I have a pair of DA pickups in my Suhr Modern and I like them much better than SD's or DiMarzios in my Charvels. However I wouldn't say that it's very warm and mellow. It might be in his Les Paul, but not in alder with maple top and all maple neck Suhr and I would think that San Dimas Style 1 should be very similar as it's alder body with maple neck and 25.5 scale.

Agreed, I wouldn't say they sound warm and mellow in my Les Paul either. They are loud and aggressive.

            This +1.

            And this +1.

I just put a set in a LP R7 and they have plenty of output, are very clear/articulate sounding, and on the bright side... which is everything I was looking for. The SD '59 is warmer, and more mellow sounding. I often find the '59 in the neck a little too muddy depending on the guitar. A SD Jazz in the neck is another good option.

I have a pair in my Suhr Modern Carve top (Basswood, Maple cap, maple neck and fb).
They sound huge and clear but the low end sometimes oversaturates. You can roll off the volume to sort that out to a degree but whilst they are excellent pick ups, they're not my personal favourites. I'll be putting Bare Knuckles in my Modern soon.

I absolutely adore Dougs tone though. So maybe these pups are better suited to a Les Paul than a Basswood Suhr.
Maybe they'd be better in an Alder body too.

In a San Dimas neck pup I'd presonally be looking at a BKP Cold Sweat, SD Jazz or Full Shred.
All men play on 10. Never gonna turn down again.

I like Doug's tone as well but the Aldrich pickups didn't make me sound like him. Which Bare Knuckles are you going with?

Just installed the Aldridge pups in my buddy's USA Soloist. I was concerned because of the difference in weight and density of the body when matched up against a LP. The pups can be a little shrill and are very high output. Soldered in a Sprague Orange Drop to tame it down a bit. The result is astounding. These are fantastic pickups. Warmer than the EMG X's that I took out of the Soloist but have almost as much gain. Superb clarity and excellent sustain...I am a believer. Not to mention the creme and black pups look amazing on the Flamed blue top with chrome pup rings. Try them out, you will be impressed.

Glad you liked them. I just used my 68 Reissue Les Paul Custom today at band practice with these pickups in it. It sounded great but on the neck pickup the low E string has a weird undertone to it, if there is such a thing. It only happens if you fret and hold a note on that string. It starts off fine but as it rings/sustains you get this lower frequency thing happening. This is through my Bad Cat Hot Cat 30 1x12 combo amp on the high gain channel. Other than that the solos on the neck pickup are in your face

When testing out the Soloist I did not have anything but clear notes with great sustain off the neck pup. I was running it through my Switchblade 100 on an Avatar 4 x 12 with 2 V30s and 2 GH12-65s in the highest gain setting I could get. Mean and crunchy! Love the pups. I may have to get a set for myself and then that of course means another project! Yes!
