12-volt power supply for Boss HM-2?

I picked up a Boss HM-2 Heavy Metal pedal a few months ago to get the old-school Swedish death metal tone, and although it is good for that sound, it seems to lack the punch that I feel it should have. Well, little did I know until recently that the HM-2 should be using a 12v power supply rather than 9v as I've been using it. I picked up a no-name 12v supply at a guitar show for $1, but of course it didn't work.

Any suggestions?

They use that shitty 12V AC adapter on these. If you use a DC adaptor won't work.

I thought all Boss pedals were 9v too. I had the same question when looking at Eventide pedals. Although it says 500ma 9v, Eventide say it needs 12v/1200ma when powering up. That's a big jump.
