I just stumbled upon a youtube video about the EL8. There was one section of the demo where the sound was always at the same volume even though the commentary was whispering or shouting. No matter how much I mess with the built in compressor of my Roland VS2400, I can't get it to compress my vocal tracks like that. Has/does anyone here use a Distressor?

It was a member's reply to a thread about a PRS seller:

It's probably just the difference in quality and features of the distressor - which is a very very nice unit. Most compressors sound okay with a little compression say 1-3db but when you really start squashing things is when the differences start to show themselves. The distressor is one of the most versatile units out there and you can go from light compression to 'squash the crap out of it' with no problems. I'm not familiar with the vs2400.

the EL8 is a great compressor. it better be for $1350.00. considering you are using a roland vs2400, i think that you could get results that you will find pleasing by using something a bit more affordable. here is a good compressor that will give you great results at a better price point:
i have a semi-pro studio where i have paying clients. i have yet to find it neccessary to spend that kind of money on a single channel compressor. granted, lately i am running pro tools with waves diamond plug-ins (which gives me a lot of killer compressors and limiters). i DO have the summit TLA50, the chameleon 7720, several alesis 3630s, several alesis nano-compressors, a couple of samson units, and a drawmer DL241. the drawmer was $850 and i get killer results, but i can also get great results from the alesis and samson units....it is all in figuring out how to use what you have.
here is an mp3 recorded in my studio. the vocals were recorded through a lauten audio clarion FC357 mic -> UA 710 preamp -> summit TLA50 -> antares vocal producer (using autotune and de-esser only) -> drawmer DL241 -> input of an alesis HD24. no mixer input for the vocals.
GEAR:
some guitars...WITH STRINGS!!!! most of them have those sticks like on guitar hero....AWESOME!!!!
some amps...they have some glowing bottle like things in them...i think my amps do that modelling thing....COOL, huh?!?!?!
and finally....
i have those little plastic "chips" used to hit the strings...WHOA!!!!
