  • Nad!!!!! Woot....

Just picked it up. I believe its a late 80's to early 90's Peavey VTX Classic. 2 x 12 combo. 2 6L6's for power and a SS preamp. Amp has the stock Scorpion 12" speakers in it with the cool metal grills on the magnet side. The amp has factory reverb and a factory phase shifter that ROCKS.
Casters. Built like a tank. Guy I bought it from told me it stopped working about 6 months ago. It was working fine, it started to crackle a little and it just popped and stopped working. Took it home, threw it on the bench and took a look. One of the speaker connectors had popped off. I popped it back on and the amp is perfect. No issues at all. I looked online and there appears to be a cult following for the VTX. Players worship these amps. Go figure.
It has 2 6L6 power tubes so I am pretty sure its the 65w version. Needs some kind of a funky multipin footswitch. I will dig one up on Ebay.
I am going to give it a thorough cleaning and clean all the pots and use it for trade bait. The guy I got it from told me that he got 20 emails today already on it. He was selling it stupid cheap but then again.. he advertised it as broken and not working and for repair only. This is a pic I found online that looks just like mine. WOOT.

Looks like a tube version of my Renown 400, Scorpion speakers and all!

That amp is pretty cool, at least for the $100 I paid for it!
    I like EL34s.

That's badass. It reminds me of the Classic Chorus 2x12, which was the #1 amp I lusted over in the 90's but could never afford.

I traded my Mace VT (same thing basically as the VTX) for my Renown 400. Just didn't feel like cleaning and retubing it as I never played it anyway. I use my Renown for a low volume bass amp recently. Those Scorpions rock!!

jgcable - The shitty thing about the footswitch is you can't switch channels or turn on/off either channel without it. The automixer/combiner is a bit expensive usually. But I have a schematic somewhere I'll send you if you want it.

Yea, if you have that schematic that would be great. I will make my own. I believe its a 6 pin din.

A cool feature of this amp is the auto set for the phaser. It allows you to lock in a specific frequency. Its similar to a parametric EQ or a notch filter.

              ROTFLMAO!

You've come full circle to my first "tube" amp LOL! I saw it had tubes in the back and thought "Hey, it's a tube amp". Then I learned more and found out it had the SS front end. We are talking 1986.

I had some fond memories of it, but since I was a complete newbie back then and had upgraded from a TC-35 Gorilla, I don't trust those memories.

I am pretty sure its a 1986 or 87. Clean tones are great. The phase shifter is one of the best vintage phasers I have ever heard and I have heard alot of them over the years. Excellent reverb, the Peavey Scorpions rock. The Saturation (lead) channel sounds very much like the Carvin X series tube amps. Its a fuzzy saturated distortion. Great for vintage rock.
When you hear it you immediately understand why this amp has a phase shifter built into it. This amp came out in the mid to late 80's but Peavey was definately aiming at the 70's vintage rock sound. Thats probably why they call it the VTX CLASSIC.

I am digging it because it doesn't sound like any of my other amps.

Makes me want to find a pair of bell bottom jeans and a mood ring! Groovy baby...

Wow, you chew through a lot of amps hehe.

I'm sure Peavey amps are great, I've known lots of guys that owned various models through the years but until the EVH association they always struck me as a "K-Mart" brand, used by guys that couldn't afford a Marshall, Hiwatt, Laney, etc. (Of which I was one, I just went for budget Fender amps instead.)

This one looks like it was pretty well kept for a mid-80's amp. Dude must have just used it as a 'bedroom' amp.

Yea, I am an amp guy for sure. I have lots of guitars but amps are my thing. The pics I provided were ones I grabbed off of the net. My amp is throughly disgusting looking. Its just really dirty. Its not damaged in any way and not missing anything. Its just really dirty. I agree, Peavey was budget but we probably all owned one back in the day. The first "good" live amp I ever owned was a Peavey Renown 2 x 12 SS combo. I used that amp for a few years at rehearsals and at gigs. The other guitar player in the band had a Peavey too. Bass player had a Peavey. I think we may have had a Peavey powered mixer and Peavey speakers too.
The first good amp I ever owned for live use was a Sound City 120W head and 2 Marshall 1960A and B that were RED with the basket weave grills. I bought the entire full stack from Sam Ash Music in White Plains, NY during one of their used gear clearance sales. The cabinets came directly off of the Buddy Miles Band tour. They were still stenceled. I got the head for $80.00 and the cabs were $150.00ea. $380.00 total and I threw an MXR Distortion + and a Phase 90 out in front and that was my live rig for about 4 years. I played every weekend throughout the tri-state area with that rig and a brand new Kramer USA Pacer and a 1968 Gibson SG.

In anycase... I love amps. All kinds, all brands. My favorite for a really long time now has been my Peavey 5150-II half stack. Its the best all around amp I have ever owned. I like it better than the Soldano SLO100 I owned.

My amp GAS has been cured...well...except that I still want to get another Mark IV.

I know Chris. I have been trying to resist. I just don't want to spend alot of time tweaking nowadays and it seems that most AxeFX users spend the mojority of the time tweaking their rigs.

No, now they spend all their time trying to find song stubs to tone match classic VH tones.

my buddy had the 1x12 version of that amp. I thought it was pretty cool....I also was sporting the "poor mans Marshall" then with a Peavey Renoun 2x12 combo, I really liked that am as I remember. I traded it in after a couple years for my 83 JCM800 2203 and 1960a 4x12 (which I still own). maybe one of these days for sentimental reasons that I'll re-buy a Renoun 2x12
