Just looking for suggestions for a good little practice amp. It's primary use will be for death metal. Gain is nice, but I also really want good articulation. Good ones for under $300?

I'm a fan of the Carvin SX series amps.
Nice tone, lots of power and a great price.
Granted I run a GT-8 in front of two SX300 combos, but they sound great on their own.

I seen a post where Bill suggested the Peavey 6505 combo. I'd have to agree, they look like a decent affordable metal amp.
Used these are a pretty good deal, though it may take a while to find one close to new or little abuse use. Priced a little over your budget but well within reach.Comment

Course, you can go with a used classic though these are not what I would consider as in the good little practice DM on the cheap.
Randall RG100 (not a practice amp), Marshall 8100 or Valvestate. Crate put out some decent tube and solid state metal oriented amps. The stealth and GFX series as far as I recall were good DM choices.Comment

Thanks for all the suggestions. I actually considered the Roland after hearing such great things. I once had a Marshall valvestate and it got wonky on me within months.Comment

I'd recommend the Roland too for what YOU need. I have a few small practice amps, not a Cube, but the Cube is great for doing thrash.Comment

Peavey vypyr is a great amp for cheap. I have the 30 watt and it does great for metal. You can also get the tube vypyr used for cheap also, but I have not tried them, just the ss version.Comment
