  • Blackstar HT50

So, the other guitar player in my band just bought a Blackstar HT50 head and a Genz Benz G-flex 2x12 cab. I know about the Gnz Bnz cabs, but what can I expect from this blackstar. He was using a 6505 combo and our tones worked well together, but I never really dug what he was getting out of the Peavey. I'm wondering How it will work with my Rig (Engl Fireball 60 + marshall 1960AV vintage 30's). Any Blackstar users have any input?

I love Blackstars, but I use the Series One range. Everybody I know that has used the HT says they are great. Here's Andy James playing some metal on an HT:

Very similar to a Marshall DSL in tone and in build quality. Here is what I think Tim. A Fireball is a great amp for a 1 guitar band. When you pair it up with a Marshall (or a Marshall clone like the Blackstar) it will be a little hard to hear it. I think a Mesa Rectifier would have been a better choice for Jay. Marshalls and Mesas sound fantastic together to my ears.
I do think the Blackstar is a nice sounding amp for something made in Korea.
Regarding the Genz Benz cab.. its a good cab.
Comparing the Blackstar to the 6505... the Blackstar will play better with a 2 guitar band. The 6505 is a grainy in your face amp that is better suited for a 1 guitar band.
The Carvin V3 would have been a very good choice.
The clip posted of James playing the Blackstar sounds fantastic but I would think that any amp that guy played through would sound amazing. He is a great player.
I'll let you know how the Blackstar sounds when I come to see your band play. I am looking forward to hearing your Fireball. I love that amp.

I'll tell you this, with the Fireball(through my boogie halfback with 2 old black shadow labeled v30's and two new v30's) and the 6505, they both sounded awesome alone, but together, it was a mess. Hard to describe other than it was just a muddy mess. Since then, I changed the tubes in the Fireball to Tung Sol 5881's and started using, my Marshall 1960AV at practice and brought the Mesa home. WOW! What a difference. The Fireball now pushes through everything. It actually made the 6505 sound better. Since then, Jay has been looking for something new, enter the Blackstar. We'll see how it goes this Tuesday. He liked the Gflex cab so much that he went back to buy the other one they had. For larger venues he's going to use both. I wonder if those were Wayne's cabs?

John, the Rectifier sounded amazing at the Dewey's gig last weekend. The whole band sounded great.

HT's sound fizzy and need to be cranked to a fair level before they sound good, they also arent full valve amps as they use diode clipping to get their drive which imo doesent sound good for a lot of styles HT's work really well for djenty tones... but meh, I tried a HT-40 combo and could not get a good distorted sound from it was fizzy no matter how low I set the gain....

Does it have to be a Blackstar...the trick is finding something that will compliment the fireball you dont wnat an amp that will make it get lost, theres alos the Jet city stuff to consider Boosted would be metal enough..

I personally use a Valveking 212 had a 6505 +112 which was nice crap cleans and mid gain tones but thats not what I got it for, with the right boost/tubes the valvekings are awesome...a bit more open sounding than the 6505's.....

He already bought the Blackstar. He's diggin it at home. We'll see what happens tomorrow night. And after putting the Tung Sol 5881's in the Fireball, nothing will make this thing lost. It is the most in your face up front tone I've had. Big difference from the 6L6's.

Hey Jim, if Jay doesn't like the Blackstar at rehearsal he is more than welcome to try out my 5150-II or the Rectifier if he wants. Just let me know.

So we had rehearsal last night. Here's the deal. The Blackstar is VERY Marshall. In a good way. John you were right on the mark with DSL comparison. Maybe even a JVM. Sounds amazing for the price. It's not to loose through the G-flex cabs either. nice and tight. He's very very happy with it. We all are. His tone was a mess before. How does it mix with the Engl? It doesn't, but I mean that in a good way. You can clearly and distinctively hear both rigs independently. Our tones are both amazing, but at the both ends of the spectrum. They are entirely different. You can hear the Engl, and you can hear the Blackstar. If someone told me thats how it would be, I would have guessed that it would sounds awful, but it doesn't. In our small rehearsal room, it sounds great. We'll see how it sounds live in a few weeks. Stay tuned........

Sounds great. Thats how I feel about Mesa Rectifiers and high gain Marshalls mixed. You would think they wouldn't sound good together but they really do. I learned alot of this stuff from owning Vetta's over the years. The 2 amps at once thing opens up your ears to the possibilities. Can't wait to see you guys. JG

LOL No worries bro. I'm sure if I had an Axe Fx, I would prefer it too. I'm anxious to see what this Blackstars gonna do when I retube it. I'm still trying to decide on what tubes to put in it, but I'm leaning towards Tungsol right now..

Even sounded better this week! these two amps are not similar in tone in any way, but they mix so well together. The only way I can describe it is that my Fireball punches a hole in the wall and then Jay's Blackstar knocks the rest of the wall down. The Fireball has such a strong mid punch. The Blackstar has mid punch as well, but not in your face so much. Very Marshally. Rehearsal at RVP on Tuesday and then Toads on Friday. It's time for the real test!
