  • Dark Terror Doom/Sludge Revelation

I've never been much into doom, stoner or sludge... or whatever you want to call it. I was bored and tired of playing the same old shit and had just finished perfecting some old school thrashy metal parts of a new song I'm writing that had been bugging me for a few days, so I grabbed my esp strat which is tuned to C#, then dropped. I was pretty baked and kinda just started playing around... the only band I can really comment on is Thorr's Hammer, but just played slow and focused mainly on just the tone and I zoned out. Wow. I look up at the clock and nearly 2 hours had passed. Still having a hard time nailing a good death metal tone but am getting closer... but what this thing does to doom metal? I'm floored. I finally get it.

It's been a while since I paid attention so directly to tone and articulation. It was interestingly refreshing. Anyway, no sound clips... I was actually thinking about it, but I left my phone at home. Perhaps next time. I never though I could ever be into that type of music, seeing how so much of what I listen to and play is somewhat technical. But I think I could enjoy it. Anyway, that's it really.

I dig the occasional doom/stoner stuff. I like Black Pyramid...

And Red Fang, although Red Fang is harder to classify as Doom...

Yeah, see, I can't really get into that myself. I was thoroughly baked though, and I'm sure that helped a lot. I was just playing slow chugga downtuned rhythm while playing softly with modes in the higher registers in ways I had never really done before and it was a really neat experience. I'm usually too focused on playing fast and sometimes ignore articulation...

The Orange, even in really high gain mode just rings out those chords in ways my other tube amps never have... I can't really explain it. I haven't owned many boutique rigs. I could never get a sound I liked out of my Bogner Fish or my Dual Rectifier, though I was always pleased listening to someone else play different styles than what I was trying to do. The DT just has wonderful delivery. Like I mentioned in the modeling thread, it just has a sustain and breakup (as well as feedback) that just sounds incredible. I can't say I've ever heard a Mesa sound so good for a particular application. Probably the closest I've heard were people using modded JCM800's or other older P2P Marshalls. It's just not a tone I really expected to find or be inspired with. I kinda just stumbled on it and went with it.
