  • New Amp Day - Excelsior

When I picked up my new Strat, I grabbed one of these amps to give it a whirl because they're really cheap.

It has some beautiful clean tones in it. The breakup would best be described as swampy. With a 15" speaker its got a lot of thump too. It really interacts in wierd ways with input slamming/distorion pedals. I think I'm going to change out the 12ax7's with some higher quality ones as I've heard in reviews of these that the stock tubes are the cheapest they could make them but still have them actually function. It's nice and simple controls though with a few differently voiced inputs so lots of opportunity to chase different tones with it.

The built in Tremolo is fairly nice too. I wish it had a bit of a depth adjustment however.

    Anyways, here's some pics...

    And bonus Strat porn...

Congrats! That's a cool little amp. I love 15" speakers for guitar.

Would any amp guys know if these need to be biased when replacing the output tubes? Since it's 13 watts I'm assuming I can just plug and play but I'd hate to assume and nuke it by accident.

I plan on replacing the preamp tubes with some Mesa SPAX7A's fairly quickly here.

I'd assume all tube amps need to be biased when changing the tubes.
