  • Friedman Steve Stevens SS-100 amplifier

The final development of over two years of touring with the Friedman Marsha 100 watt head has resulted in the first amplifier that Steve has put his name and ray gun on.
Called the SS-100, it has two amp channels, one a super clean that Steve likens to a Fender Twin and the other similar to the Marsha, but with a more 'vintage' plexi Marshall style tone.
But with more gain on tap, yet able to play chords and not be super saturated.
This is what he says about the amp:

Essentially, the clean channel on the SS is a Fender Twin. Super super clean. If you want slightly dirty, using a distortion pedal will work perfectly. It was important to keep the amp simple but generate a million dollar sound. In my humble opinion, when amps try and do too many things you end up with 3 good channels, and never get that one incredible one. This amp is without a doubt, the easiest guitar amp to play through and sound good, and important point here.....sound tonally and dynamically like you are listening to a record.Essentially, the clean channel on the SS is a Fender Twin. I have heard he may do a demo video himself, but here is one from the recent LA Amp show played by Doug Rappoport of The Edgar Winter Band on a Luxxtone geetar with no effects and a Vintage 30 loaded cab:

Ships at $3600 with footswitch from Tone Merchants via RACKSYSTEMS in N.Hollywood, Ca.

That sounds pretty awesome. Sure is pricey though.

The clean channel is so good, he had to say it twice in one paragraph!

I guess better players than me need a clean channel. SS sure is better than me! But I hate cleans and have no use for them Ouch on the price of that, too.

If you were designing it for your own use, as Steve has and he has allowed those who can afford it to have the exact same amp and you were replacing a CAE 100 watt amp for cleans, that alone is the same price and then six vintage plexi Marshalls as Steve used to use on stage and the amp is hand wired built in the USA by the best boutique builder available George Metropoulos then that price is reasonable.
Whew that was a long sentence.
Check out the prices of specialty amps these days and sure I can't afford one and many can't but you get what you pay for.
I am just letting you guys know that high end there is an alternative to modding existing amps, amps like Diezel, Splawn, Bogner, ect.
As I got older I appreciated cleans as that can reveal a lot about a player and you can display more of your individuality rather than high gain all the time, ect.
Sure personally speaking, with higher gain I feel I can rip faster than without it, but that isn't always the best sound for me personally.
The huge explosion of guys using pedals these days makes it almost a requirement that an amp for a player who gigs that the amp take pedals well..Steve didn't collaborate on a bedroom amp, though the amp can be adjusted to act as one.
Wait until he demos the amp properly and hopefully he will use his Charvel not these Suhr's, though excellent guitars, for me I don't want one, I love my Washburn's, had to sell my killer Hamer Chapparal Custom, but still have my Hamer replica SS-3 guitar which kills.
There was a lot of internet talk recently with people assuming that his Josie/Wifey graphic Suhr Modern set neck was some sort of SS Sig model which it emphatically is not and never said it was..
Steve has said many times he has had enough of Signature guitars by the early nineties.
He uses Les Paul's for 90% of the time these days anyway.
Here is a demo of the Friedman Brown Eye 100 watt head, think Marshall 2203 even more awesome by Mark Day now with Tone Merchants for a taste of the Friedman magic, he is the man these days and have talked with him over the years and he is a cool guy.
No bs he does what he says and is super quick and many top players have amps, pedal boards and full racks built by him .
This clip has the Motor City pickups fitted to the Suhr Modern used, instead of the usual Suhr Aldrich, which is what SS uses in most of his Suhr's:

I've never had the opportunity to play any of the Friedman amps in person, but they all sound great in the video demos. They are overpriced IMO, but they are in line with the prices on comparable amps from other boutique builders.

Some 'cleans' from the BE-100, the SS-100 I haven't heard the clean channel demoed yet, but it will be much more 'clean', there did I say clean enough times..lol
Here's a demo of a Suhr Sky Blue Burst Modern through a Friedman BE100Recorded using an iPhone 5 with a Tascam IM2 stereo condenser mic iPhone attachment.

Phil X what can I say.....

I can nail the Steve Stevens tone with my Hughes & Kettner Switchblade, and my Laney AOR.

It just takes a cranked Marshall based amp

I've wondered how much of Steve's overdrive comes from the amp and how much from pedals?
I've seen vids of him demoing a number of pedals, usually with a pretty clean amp. Does he
ever use a pedal to goose a master volume amp that's already pretty distorted?

Nice sounding amp for sure. Along with a bunch of other nice sounding amps on the market at a lower price. Good luck moving them, I hope they do well.
I want to go out nice and peaceful in my sleep like my grandfather, not screaming and hollering like the passengers in his car.

Hey straycat I may get carried away at times I will admit and I am not a fan boi. I just know a lot about him that's all.
I joined this forum in the first place to find out any information about Steve's Glow Dinky.
Nobody here has had any information at all. Or not told me anything I don't already know.
I have taken a break from SS related stuff.
I don't have OCD and my Glow Charvel thread has well over 5K views and the Vintage Washburn SS story I wrote has had views since late 2010, so I will admit I have posted a lot about Steve and am taking a vacation.

Don't call me a fan boi though OK.
I have Bipolar Disorder Type II if that's ok with you only recently diagnosed, so I get carried away with info.
                            Don't insult me please.
I am past uber stage, but I know what I am talking about.
I left Jenkin's board as they were equally clueless about the guitar I was researching, thanks to Chubtone for your appreciation.
I have another project in the works but have taken a temporary vacation from it.
                            Thanks for your diagnosis anyway,

Diminishing returns kick in pretty quick with amps, as it does with many other products.
