  • Cygnus 21 Watt Kepler

Took the idea from the 30 watt 6L6GC design and applied it to
    6V6GC's.

I wasn't sure how it would come out, was afraid I might lose some of the fullness that 6L6's provide.
    Can't know without trying!
Prototyped it using an Ampex GTC power transformer and a Hammond AO 6V6 8 ohm output transformer.
Not sure of the manufacturer, it came from a Hammond organ.
Dr. Z is also a fan of Hammond iron and designs...that was the source for his Ghia.

GREAT cleans (that's what I aim for first), not unlike a Tweed Deluxe except fuller.
Has that "three dimensional" quality to it.
The high gain is rich, very smooth and not fizzy at all.
That's the other thing I aim for.
What I have done is use the same preamp as the 7 watt SE, and the 30 watt, and tweaked just a little to accommodate the different characteristics of the power section.

Design of the power section is like the 30 watt.
    Independent cathode bias.
Not very many people really do that, most are fixed when designing
    high gain amps.
I think that's where the Cygnus stands apart and why the tone remains
dynamic and compresses just the right amount when pushed.

Now on to work on the cab and cosmetics.
This amp is also 1/2 of another project being sponsored by a semi-world famous friend who has some ideas...we shall see!

        No, this one is mine.
You need to get this one Stray.
It would sound great with your Jackson cab.
Make room, and think about some trade bait!

(This is NOT a classified ad...).

Long live hand wired PTP builds also!

Someone just sent me an Ampeg ReverbRocket reissue to "do whatever" with.
          Old style 2xEL34's.
That fuggen thing is sad...built literally like a Crate.
          Completely disposable.
          Cheap components all surface mounted.

Ampeg used to be bullet proof!

Post some sound clips and maybe we can work out a deal Cyg.
Still have some guitars on the block as always.
            Really? well screw Mark Twain.

Poor excuse from me but Jim Marshall was a drummer that couldn't play guitar,
and Leo Fender wasn't a guitarist.
Not sure how Randall Smith's musical career went either.
                  Or...take your pick.
Whatever you do, DON'T watch the YT of H.A. Dumble playing.

Thats precisely why Jim and Leo didn't demo their own amps. They got famous pro's to do it for them.

Many have reminded me of that!
                      This is a fact!

Truth is...although I love building amps and getting them into to the hands of
others...I'm not all that willing to go "in business".
Sure I playfully brand them with my business name (Cygnus Music is from 1992) and
would like to build at an accelerated pace it is more about development than anything else.

Now I have to ask myself why I just dumped about $900 into parts last week.

One day I will own one of your amps. Hopefully that day is soon.

That's a great endorsement from someone who doesn't even own one of the Cygnus models!

Stray, yours is simply a Champ circuit built into an old radio.

That being said, I am busy building an EL34 version of the Cygnus.
                            Might call it the "Hawking".
                            Should be about 40 watts.
Cathode biasing is less efficient so you won't see the same wattage ratings you are used to.
But the overall design is very efficient in the preamp...so there is plenty of volume.

As always I will tweak the preamp to fit what the power tubes offer.
I have a feeling this might be the highest gain model of the class AB1 push-pull series.

I know Cyg but you built it no matter what its patterned after.
