Took the idea from the 30 watt 6L6GC design and applied it to
6V6GC's.
I wasn't sure how it would come out, was afraid I might lose some of the fullness that 6L6's provide.
Can't know without trying!
Prototyped it using an Ampex GTC power transformer and a Hammond AO 6V6 8 ohm output transformer.
Not sure of the manufacturer, it came from a Hammond organ.
Dr. Z is also a fan of Hammond iron and designs...that was the source for his Ghia.
GREAT cleans (that's what I aim for first), not unlike a Tweed Deluxe except fuller.
Has that "three dimensional" quality to it.
The high gain is rich, very smooth and not fizzy at all.
That's the other thing I aim for.
What I have done is use the same preamp as the 7 watt SE, and the 30 watt, and tweaked just a little to accommodate the different characteristics of the power section.
Design of the power section is like the 30 watt.
Independent cathode bias.
Not very many people really do that, most are fixed when designing
high gain amps.
I think that's where the Cygnus stands apart and why the tone remains
dynamic and compresses just the right amount when pushed.
Now on to work on the cab and cosmetics.
This amp is also 1/2 of another project being sponsored by a semi-world famous friend who has some ideas...we shall see!
