Nice. I've got a DOD Juice Box, which eventually became the Digitech Bad Monkey... DOD/Digitech are the same company. Very cool pedals.

I had a Boss Metal Zone and all I could get from it was the sound of 1000000 bees with a buzz saw in the background.

I currently run 3 different distortions. The Emma PisdiYAUwot for main distortion. An Effect Tube Drive for more traditional and/or Bluesy overdrive. An Aurora Borealis for lead boost. I could run that as a distortion as well if I wanted. I also have a hand built fuzz pedal which I seldom use but can profuse unique sounds quite like Fuzz Factory. Actually it was a Fuzz Factory clone until I replaced a couple of caps in it to get rid of the intense high end.

This is actually my board. I plug straight into the clean channel of my Peavey 6505+ which runs a Marshall 1960A cab, AND into a 1978 Fender Twin reverb concurrently. If I want only a clean sound, I simply use the A/b switch to shut off the signal to the 6505+. Because the cleans in that are horrible. You can play AC/DC with the cleans on one of those......

I actually find this whole topic of tone interesting. Its cool how one player thinks one pedal sounds like ASS and another thinks it sounds like GOD. Some players think they have great tone. Another player hears it and thinks it sounds like ASS. We all like to think we know what good tone is right

Because tone is in the fingers and each has their own set.

Seriously, my ex-bandmate sets his gate so high that unless you have a strong attack and picking technique you can't play anything and you'll think his setup sucks! But he's like an encyclopedia; you name a famous song and he'll start playing the riff.

I've also got the Monte Allums modified Metal Zone ... bought it from someone here a couple years ago. It sounds pretty decent through certain amps (sounds like ass through my THD Univalve). I prefer it as a boost and for its eq than using it as a stand-alone distortion pedal. If you really want a straight-ahead death metal sound, it'll work wonders, though.

I think it's interesting that the tone I love isn't actually that distorted and comes more from the fingers of the players I love. The thing is the more you distort, the more a valve amp will sound like a solid state amp and I don't like that fizzy flatness. Take my DSL50 head it's great with loads of sustain and clarity on the green channel, really easy to play actually. But put it on the red channels and it's pretty horrid, all that bubbly valve tone and bounce gets lost when you crank the gain past about 3 and I don't know if my valves are biased too low, but I actually loose sustain and harmonics and the tone is brittle yuk horrible, even at 3 or above volumes, yet I can't hear the lower strings at all, they are muddy, it drives me nuts frankly. It has way too much gain on the red channel and not enough grunt and it's voiced waaaaay too bright, and not in a good way. I got rid of the 1960A cab too and got a 70's cab with Rolas in it, really because those Celestion GT12 75's are like the DSL50 on the red channel, all scoop and brittle tones and bass. No mid range at all. Which is actually my sweet spot. Now a 1960 cab and a DSL on the red channel is great for all this heavy scooped metal stuff, but for Demartini or Lynch and '80's tones, it is kack frankly, totally un Marshall like IMO.

So the ideal tone for me is a balance I think between not losing that valve sound whilst having enough overdrive and gain to sound good. Lynch and Demartini don't actually use that much gain, nor does EVH. Volume maybe and a cranked tube amp, but not a shedload of distortion. The core of their tone comes more from their fingers, technique and the valves.

I am still experimenting about how to get the best tone out of the DSL, I know it's possible, although even with the Capacitor mod, I don't think it will ever be as grunty as a JCM800 2204 on the red channel, but with an SD-1 Overdrive and the green channel and maybe a distortion, I don't know, as I say I'm still experimenting. Ideally I'd have a JMP 2203, a boss overdrive and an attenuator I think. I hate delay and processed tones. Actually don't even like reverb much.

Maybe someone could suggest a way to boost the green channel a bit further or get the best out of the red channel. I guess this is the thing to do, judging by how everyone seems to be using different amps for this or that and boosting them.

Been told the MXR EQ was brilliant.

The pedals I mentioned (OCD, Retro-Sonic 808, and Zakk Wylde OD) are pedals I use to hit an already overdriven amp through the front end. For a good pedal to use on a clean channel, which I don't often do, I like the MI Audio Crunch Box. The Crunch Box has plenty of gain on its own.

Im still messing with how to make the tubes work for me as well. The YCV80 i have is actually the first tube amp I have owned in 10 years. I really don't know if its going to work. I think its going to provide a great base to build on....for now. I agree, you don't need as much distortion at higher volumes. It sounds like crap to me. Ok, at least on my amp. I do like a touch of reverb just for some wetness, but not tons I think the key is indeed in the fingers. But as they say, you can't polish a turd? So you still need some tone for sure. I have lots of different senarios to try at rehearsal today. I REALLY want to hear what the amp distortion sounds like with the OD boost at high volumes. It seems, after tons of googling and conversation here, theres a lot of players doing that successfully. Man, if ONLY funds were unlimited.

Well the MXR was a FAIL! I'm not about to say the pedal sucks. It just didn't work with my amp. I'll take it back tomorrow and try again next week!!

Besides the guitar - one word - VOLUME !! Its hard to know for sure. What I can say is the MXR wasn't even close. Its sounded HORRIBLE. no matter what I did.....I did manage to get some better tones out of the amp on the plus side....

Not sure if it'd be ok, but you could also run the distortion pedal through the amp's fx-return. that way you can make use of the amp's tube poweramp section which as it happens is the biggest game-changer between solid state vs tube amps in general.
