  • Peavey Mace,Deuce,classic,heritage?

I see these all the time for CREAP, so whats the difference between them and which is the best? I know they're part solid state and part tube but is there a difference in kind of tubes/how many?

    Thanks!

I owned a Peavey Mace for several years. It was my first amp that was loud enough to be used live. I recall it having a nice clean and reverb, with the caveat that I was totally into metal at the time so may not have been the best judge. You could overdrive the preamp to get a lot of distortion, but it was slightly less pleasant than listening to a chainsaw and because it's all SS you can't really push it with a pedal. A true distortion pedal works fine. I had problems with both the footswitch and the built-in phase off and on, but that may be due to having to get a local TV tech to work on it rather than an amp tech. There is an earlier version of the Mace that has a different preamp than mine had. I believe it's most famous as being the sound of Lynyrd Skynyrd.

The Mace has 6 6L6's producing a claimed 160 W. Mine was a 2x12 and weighed over 100 lbs. Seriously, the move to a Marshall half stack made my life much better for moving gear around! The Deuce is exactly the same amp, but with 4 6L6's producing 100 W. The Classic and Heritage are later takes on basically the same premise. I've never played through one, so can't compare.

The thing you can do with one of these for cheap is to run a rack system into the power amp section of the Mace. I did that for a while with mine and it worked great. It was the best it ever sounded. It'll only be a mono power amp, but still is a lot cheaper to go get one of these 2x12 combos than any decent power amp and separate cab.

I have a working Duece, without the cab.

And I have evil plans for that SS preamp section.

I have a 74 Deuce 2X12 combo SS pre amp 4 6L6's in the power section.
Mine sounds great very loud BTW, nice OD tone too.Nails southern rock easily.Takes pedals very well.
Need a moving co to haul it around tho'.

What are you planning? I always want to use the functionality of the front panel, so I'd feel obligated to give it reverb and a phaser when building the preamp.

Btw, are you going to change to a tube PI or leave the SS one?

              Not sure just yet.
If I did go all tube, then the PI would absolutely be converted.

Working on a Cygnus EL34 version at the moment, plus 14 other projects.

I had the Classic VTX once back in 1980s. I had good memories, but didn't keep it long.

Out pawn shopping Sat and saw a few Classic VTX's and almost bought one.I figured hell I already have the Deuce do I really need the VTX?
They were all priced around $225.00 which is a decent price.Good amps IMO.

                    Stray,

I usually see them for $199, so work that price down some.

                      The Cygnus EL34 is alive!
I thought the gain structure would be different...and it is.
I'll start a new thread in a while.
Let me hint this amp sounds awesome.
