  • 5150 cab - Sheffields

Quick summary: Need an easy way to tell if Sheffield speakers are in a 5150 cabinet.

    Long version:
Hey guys, I have a 5150 head but have always ran it through a Soldano 4x12.
I've heard from various dudes here on JCF that this head sounds really great through a 5150 cab WITH SHEFFIELDS.
I have had this Soldano forever, so I'm not super familiar with 4x12 cabs.
I am going to look at a 5150 cab tonight, please give me detailed instructions on how to open it up and what exactly to look for.

I'll assume one removes the back and peeps whether the speakers have "Sheffield" printed on 'em

But what's the other speaker possibility? (the one to reject?)

What's in the Soldano? V30s I'm guessing. My buddy has the matching 5150 cab with Sheffields, but I run my 5150 through a Lopoline 2X12 cab with V30s, and IMHO, the 2X12 sounds WAY better. However, I will also concede that my buddy's 5150 has sounded horrible for a long time, and I think he needs new pre-amp tubes at least.

I imagine your 5150 sounds great through that Soldano cab.

EDIT: Oh yes, you're gonna have to take the back of the cab.

EDIT PART 2 THE SEQUEL: Weirdly enough, I've had my buddy's 5150 4X12 cab right here for months, and have never once plugged my 5150 block letter into it to try it out. I'm going to give it a try this weekend and compare it to the 2X12.

They will have Sheffield printed on them. Guaranteed. I have one. Also.. the cabinet will be 16 ohms and it won't be switchable. It will have a 1/4 jack and an XLR on it. The speaker frames if I recall are silver.
The back comes off just like a Marshall 4 x 1. Lots of screws.

Nothing makes a 5150 sound better than a 5150 cab loaded with Sheffields. At least not to my ears. I own a 5150-II and the matching 4 x 12 bottom. Its a very manly sound.

Yeah, bring a drill/driver. Otherwise, you won't be able to masturbate for at least a few hours afterwards.

They should be model 1200 and say 5150. All the cabs I've seen have those labels.

My block logo slant has Sheffields, all labeled.
I'll try to dig up some internal pics.

I have an older Peavey 4x12 cab (non 5150 variety) and it has Sheffields in it. I was not fond of these speakers played with my Mesa Dual Recto at the time. Also, be aware that some cabs are front loaded, not necessarily the 5150. Soldano 4x12 cabs are a bit smaller size wise than a standard Marshall 4x12 and the front grill has little tabs you pull out to release the front grill cloth from the cab. The speakers are secured wi th screws from the front and come from the front. Newer Bogner Uberkabs are like this as well.

lol... Cygnus/Warlok got it. I've seen these in them as well. Not marked 5150, no idea if they're different.

Yeah, I always felt the 5150 cabs with sheffields sounded better than my celestion 75s. Tried a few celestion cabs Marshalls and Ampegs with 75s and 30s. I think the Sheffields just held up to the woof from the resonance that could be dialed up with the 5150s. Still like my celestions for my VHT rig tho.

My pic was too small but they also have 1200 Series on them.
I also converted my cab to 8 ohm stereo or 4 ohm mono with a pair of switching jacks.
It is my test bed cab, it's always connected to something on the bench.
I also like the bass response.

Anytime looking at a cab (especially if you can't plug it in at the time and even if so...) bring a screwdriver and a multi-meter. Just like scumbags selling OFR's with swapped out saddles, people swap out the speakers with hopes someone doesn't take the time to take off the 50 screws on the back panel. Anyway, always test each speaker and cab inputs with the multi-meter.

BTW, I've never heard anything but positive reviews on the Sheffield speakers.

This cab is at a Guitar Center in my county, but farther away than I cared to travel.
So, I walked into my local GC (the one at which I used to work), gritted my teeth, and bought it. $ 187.49 after my Dutch-style haggling They'll have it shipped up to the local store & I'll check it out next weekend; if I don't like it, they'll refund me.
